I would never risk my life on a gun that I was not perfectly comfortable with, Sigmas suck. If I were you I would look at maybe the sig-sauer line or even walther. I will not depend on a faulty gun, but its your life, what is it worth to you? Carry the best you can afford!!

I had a SW Sigma 9VE model and it was good for simple self-defense or just for fun at the range. However, these guns are nowhere near as durable as an SW MP9 or for that matter a Glock or SA XD pistol. The Sigma uses what appears to be a cheaper nylon for the frame and the guiderod is very, very wear-dated. I will say that the 9E(discontinued) and 9VE were much better than the F and V models. The newer models do not stovepipe and use a better spring system. Mine never jammed. And they are easier to take down than a Glock. But the truth is that the Sigma is not for domestic law enforcement. It is for the general public and foreign contracts (developing countries) more than for anyone else.

You realize of course that while weight is less with polymer framed pistols, recoil and muzzle flip are signifigantly more pronounced.
Weight is often a prime consideration in a CCW pistol, but always balance that against shot-to-shot recovery if, god forbid, the day arrives when you have to defend your life with it.
The bottom line is practice extra hard with the gun you choose to carry, and know what to expect when you pull the trigger.
That being said, The M&P is an excellent pistol. You can't really go wrong with a S&W product. I'm a firm believer in them. I've never been let down by or disappointed with the performance of a S&W.

My first gun was a Sigma .40. Nothing but issues. I even got it fixed and I had issues with it. I do know that they have upgraded or redesigned them recently and do not know how they are. I have been thinking of picking one up again. I have heard nothing but good things from the M&P, I prefer the Beretta Px4 Storm.
you may want to look at smaller guns though if it is for CC. Compact or sub-compact.

When I first started, we used revolvers. (Black Powder ones!)If there is a place you can try some of your choices out, that is the best idea. The worlds best gun is worthless if you don't hit well with it.
Our department went to S+W 645's after I came back with glowing reports from the factory armorers class. We got to see it in the developmental stage ( 1984) Found out later that it was a bit big for my short fingers. I shoot a Colt Gov model much easier.
I wish you well in your career.

Please avoid the Sigma series pistols, from what I've seen at my range they are nothing but problems waiting to happen. They are SW's entry level pistol for centerfire, meaning they're the cheapest. The M&P is a much better choice if you're dead set on getting a SW. You might want to look at Glocks sub-compact line of pistols, Springfield XD compact, Beretta Storm, CZ P01, Kimber ultra carry, HKUSP compact, find the pistol that fits YOU best, what fits your hand might not fit me, the M&P comes with 3 backstraps to ensure that you can fit the pistol to YOUR hand, afterall, it's you thats going to be using it.

I cannot recommend the S & W Sigma .9mm even though the latest generation models may (or not) be okay. I purchased a first generation S & W Sigma .9mm and it was... Junk. It constantly jammed and stovepiped and was never fixed even after being returned twice.
Save up for a Glock. You won't regret it.
Best.

I own a Sigma 9 and have no complaints. Just don't use those remington hollowpoints that they sell at wal-mart in the 100 pack. I tried those and it jammed several times. Works perfectly with decent ammo, though.
