I have recently met up with an old school friend, she has now become a born again christian, I am not a religous person at all, but I respest her beliefs. The last time we met up for a coffee she told me I would go to hell for not being a 'born again christian'...I wasnt too bothered, but she then said my two year old would also go to hell, This has really offened me and I am really angry that she could say that...I dont really want to see her ever again. Should I tell her that she has upset me..what is a born again christian?

Stay away from her. If there is a Hell, I think I'd rather be there if people like her are going to be in Heaven....

*rolls eyes*
OK...where to begin?
Your last question "what is a born again Christian" needs the most attention, I think.
There is no such thing as a Christian who has not been born again, nor is there any such thing as a Christian who has not been sealed with the Holy Spirit. However, there are unscrupulous false prophets that are, in the words of the Bible, "making merchandise out of God's people" by selling them some rather outrageous notions. I think that is why we are told to "test the spirits to see if they be of God"...
When you talk to some of these folks, think of Jesus...would He "slay" anyone's spirit? Would He "speak in tongues"? Would He be overcome with "holy laughter", or lurch around as if He were "drunk in the spirit" or roll around on the floor making animal noises "in the spirit"? NO?? Well, then, it would seem pretty clear that the spirit behind these things is not of God...
I respect that you are not a religious person at all, and so should your friend. As a Christian, I ought to be concerned about your eternity, but your daughter's is pretty well assured, at least till she gets old enough to understand these things...and if you have not taught her, be sure she will hear of them elsewhere.
OH, wait...maybe I shouldn't have told you that last bit. See, there seems to be this big war on Christianity going on...yes, I know, we do seem to be in the majority now...but think about it, if Jesus were running things, WOULD we be having so many problems? I don't think so. Blessed are the meek, the humble, and the poor...everyone would be smiling, and nobody would have to live in the street while someone else throws away more than they can ever use...but I digress...
As I was saying, there is this war on Christianity. Those of us who have studied these things have been expecting it, and we know that we are on the losing side...well, in a physical sense, anyhow. We know that the church is destined to be overcome by the world, and we are concerned, perhaps, for our personal safety, but not for our eternity, because we also know that, in the end, Jesus will make one spectacular come-back.
The problem is, in the meantime, there will be a famine...not a famine for food and drink, as some think...but a famine for the truth of God. It's going to be harder and harder for the youngster to learn these truths, and she will need them.
My prayer this evening is for her.
May God overshadow her in the protecting embrace of His wings, and may He not let her be taken in by the wiles of the Enemy...may He bring her home to everlasting love to be His beloved child forever.

(It'd be nice if Mom would come too, but she's old enough to make up her own mind. I do pray, however, that God might touch your heart tonight, and that you might at least be a bit more curious and want to know more about these things.
Feel free to email me...)

christians say that if you accept jesus as personal savior he will save you from going to "hell" and you can go to "heaven" instead. then you're supposed to go around telling everyone else the same thing whether they want you to or not. Also, a two year old is too young to make an active choice whether or not to believe in the christian faith. I also find it highly offensive that she would make that comment. I was about five when i heard and understood their message and at that time was "saved". I was about 12 when i realized it was not my religion of choice and began to study all religions seeking the truth and wanting to know if there was a "true" religion. i have come to realize each person must follow their own path, and while my path is paganism that doesn't mean yours is. I hope for you that if you choose to follow any religion at all that you do so because it is right for you, and not because someone else insisted you must.

That was a really wicked thing to say. If there is a hell (which no one knows for sure anyway) I think she is more likely to end up there than your child. Where do these people come from, trying to tell everyone what they should do and how they should behave. G W Bush is a born again christian - that tells you all you need to know about them.

BaC are fundamentalists. Fundamentalists, whether Hindus, Muslims or Christians, want their holy books taken literally. They want their religion to be the fundament of society, dominating worldly powers.
It is remarkable to observe that fundamentalists, convinced as they are about the superiority of their views, tend to use fear and aggression as a way to convert people. It is the way of cowards and stupid people.
Do not let your life be driven by fear or guilt. If somebody tells you that your child is a beautiful child, you will forget that remark easily. If somebody tells you something bad will happen to your child, you will feel bad, afraid and offended a long time. It is normal, because mothers are always worried about the future of their kids. It is cheap and very dirty trick.
Why don't you give your friend a nicely framed text that you might know:

"It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin." Luke 17:2

Have a nice day and a lot of happiness with your kid.

Stay away from her. She has no right to use her beliefs as a weapon to scare and threaten.
Such people are sad and lonely and too willing to hurt everybody else.
If heaven does exist, it is personal. In your own soul. It is not a village of concentration camps for each creed.
And it is certainly not an elite resort for card-holding members!
All loving people, no matter what religion they are, can go to a personal heaven, if they really believe they can.
All it requires is staying true to your own heart, never intentionally hurting any life form unless in self-defence. And learning from experience and past mistakes, both personal and global.
Heaven is for the pure and generous. For all children and for all animals, and for some adults who remain loving and child-like all their lives.
Your friend, and anyone like her, is just really a born again Nazi, isn't she?

True friends accept each other for who they are and respect each other's beliefs. Unfortunately, most of the born-again types I know expect everyone else to cater to their beliefs because they believe they have a monopoly on the truth. If your friend was so inconsiderate to have said what she said about your son, then I wouldn't consider her to be much of a friend at all - at least not the sort of "friend" anyone needs!

Just another fine example of the harm caused by religion . . .

It always amazes me what "born again Christians" manage to extract from the bible. It also staggers me how mean spirited they can be. It is certainly not Christianity as you, or I, or Jesus, would understand it. The arrogance of the judgments they feel qualified to make is breathtaking. Telling her that she has upset you won't get you anywhere. Simply keep away from her.

Aber - it is not religion that is mean-spirited, just some "religious" people. It takes a big stretch of the imagination to describe, for instance, Jesus as "mean-spirited".

Born again is cult speak for an extremely fundamentalist form of Christianity created by Billy Graham. After Billy Graham showed them how to do it the Bakkers adapted it to TV and spawned the Televangelists.
Unless you are able to invest a great deal of time in deprograming your friend she is lost to reason.
It is better for you just to write them off.

Remember that these are often the people who follow men like Jim Jones into jungles to commit mass suicide.

Sometimes, new Christians get so gungho about getting their family and friends saved, they go overboard. You have to remember she is only trying in the only way she knows how, to make you see what she has discovered for herself.

To be born again, means you have accepted the sacrifice, Jesus made on the cross for your sins. You need to get a Bible if you don't have one and read the Gospel of John..it will explain a lot to you and talk to a preacher if you know one. She just wants you in Heaven with her. And yes, the Bible does say, there are only two kinds of people in the world...those who believe in him or those who deny him....those who believe in him,,go to Heaven,,,those who deny him...will go to Hell.....as far you little daughter,,,she is not of an age to understand yet, so can't be expected to make a choice...if you bring her in the way she should go, however..she will be saved along with you.
