They are most likely one of the following: Lonely, paranoid, suspicious (of their spouse or something), suffer from OCD, or just plain old curious. My favorite is when someone calls me and it is a wrong number, then they call back, still the wrong number, but then they call back again. Do you not know that you are dialing the SAME number. The number you have is WRONG. It doesn't matter how many times you dial it, it will still be WRONG. 8 ^ (

There may be many reasons the person called you back besides paranoia. Maybe he was waiting to be contacted for a job interview and thought you were a prospective employer. Maybe he was waiting for a friend or a girlfriend to call and thought that maybe their number was changed. Maybe he's just one of those curious types that wants to know what was going on. Maybe he's lonely and wanted to hear another human voice. Or maybe he has been harassed so many times that he now expects every call he doesn't recognize to be a person bent on bothering him.
I do agree that calling a wrong number back after it rang once is a bit excessive. As long as the person was polite about it, though, I really don't see the harm. If he was rude about it, well, that's just...rude. Everyone makes mistakes now and then.

Just wait until the person or voice mail picks up and say, "Excuse me. I dialed the wrong number."
Folks receiving time-sensitive business calls or who have a lot of loved ones "out of pocket" may call back for peace of mind--to make sure there is nothing to be concerned about so they won't be distracted by "what if."

If someone calls my phone, and their number is in my phone, it shows me the name of the person who's calling. But if the number is not in my phone, it simply shows the number, and I'm left to wonder if it's one of my friends who called, or someone that I don't know. Like you, I often just let the person leave a message, but if I were expecting a call from someone, I could see how I might think an unknown call could be from them.

I get calls like that at home and at work. Sometimes, people are so belligerent about it! They keep repeating, but someone called me from this phone. Ever hear of a wrong number? The intelligence level of the average person is frightening.

OMG - I know what you mean! It's unbelievable that people take the time to call back on a hang up. I had a woman call me and tell me I was rude for hanging up after she said it was a wrong number. As if I owed her conversation.

They don't necessarily know that you dialed the wrong number. But you are right people are paranoid. But then look who made them that way. Their President, who wants everyone to believe that your next door neighbors are terrorists and their children will suicide bomb you.

People sometimes think that it might have been a family member or friend calling from someone else's phone. This has happened within our family.
