A polygamous Mormon stated this during a tv interview Thursday night. He was asked if he truly mean't this and he stated that it was part of the Mormon belief system. I had to think this was just his opinion not their church's teachings.

If he was a polygamist, he is not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. If he said anything racist, it is not part of our church. I suspect that he was used as a plant to confuse people about the church.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and can offer the following facts:

1) Those who live in polygamy are not Mormons or members of the LDS church. They belong to their own group of religion and are not affiliated with us.

2) We do not believe that because someone has black skin that they are a decendent of Cain. Human beings have been on this earth a long time and who can say they are not related through blood line one way or another anymore.

3) There are many critics of the church that will say otherwise, but they are incorrect in their statements. All people are equals in the church and to God. We are all brothers and sisters.

4) If anyone decides to quote McKonkie which I am sure they will, remember that he was stating his opinion and not official church doctrine. Official doctrine is found in the standard works including the Bible, Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price, and Doctrine and Covenants. It is also given by the First Presidency and 12 Apostles of the Church in official declarations and/or letters to the Church. All other comments are the opinion of those giving them based on their own study and personal consideration. This comment is taken from the Church website where it is stated as such by the Church Public Relations Department.

Warren Jeffs of the FLDS church was an active racial bigot until his recent arrest in Vegas. I saw videos of his 'sunday school' lessons regarding blacks.

However, this was the attitude of the lds church also right until 1978. The turnaround was sudden, but left many of the older generations of members upset and confused that one of the core teachings was so easily reversed.

The church is in a stage of self denial about the entire history, and make excuses that , "We don't know why god changed his position.." or "We don't exclude anyone anymore.." or "That happened way back before 1978.." and the best excuse so far, "That was just the opinion of a few men..." and conveniently forget to mention the 'few men' included apostles and prophets - and considerably more than just a few.

Nearly every contemporary sect of 'mormonism' has a few skeletons in their closet that they'd prefer to forget. I prefer they remember and officially apologize publicly.

I'll be impressed with the church as a culture when a black democrat Baptist is elected Mayor of Provo.

It used to be Brigham Young's teaching as mentioned in his Journal of Discourses. Oddly Young condemned slavery yet forbade Africans from holding priesthood or political offices. This was an official church teaching until recently when due to political pressure they abandoned the policy. Ironically in their Book of Mormon there are passages in Jacob that say all are equal in God's eye, as well the darker skinned unbelievers were more righteous than the believers (who professed to believe) because the dark skinned folks had one wife only while the fair skinned folks were having many wives and concubines which was a whoredom and abomination to God.

I do not believe Joseph Smith ever taught it, he even called an African man into the priesthood and never taught racism... it was entirely a concept from Brigham Young.

Today the Utah church has officially disavowed all racist doctrines yet when they do so they never admit it was a gross error of their past "prophets".

When you confront them with these discrepencies they will often say "that was not official church doctrine" however the truth of the matter is it WAS "Church Official Doctrine" thereby making it official church doctrine by default... especially if their supreme leader taught and practiced it. They looked to him as an infallible pope and would not dare challenge any of Young's teachings.

When I learned of these and many other discrepencies in their history and beliefs I left them for good... even though I staunchly still believe in the Book of Mormon. Too bad the Mormons do not follow the book they name themselves after!

Polygamists are not "Mormon".

SOME Mormons believe that blacks are descended from Cain, others from Ham. I don't really give it much thought.

No, we do not think that Blacks are evil! In fact, we have many Black members! And we do not treat them any differently than other members of the Church!
As you can see by the answers above me, there are always those who would spread lies, and misconceptions, to fool others about what we really think, and believe!
And you can always tell by the answers about who is a member , and who is not! Those who spread lies, are easy to see through because of their sarcasm!
Check out the Church, if you have any doubts and you will find out for yourself, what we believe!

I know for a fact there are black people who are Mormon so this must be the mans opinion. Who knows maybe Adam and Eve were black and the mark on Cain was turning him white, we may never know for sure.

I don't know if they think that or not .... I have heard other religions saying that too ...... but if you want to know what race has the mark of Cain ......... look at how a race acts toward other societies. and how they treat them...........look at their way of living and getting food clothing and shelter........ the answer will surprise you so much ....... just think now.

Blacks are not considered to be evil in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Black members are allowed to participate in the Church in the same ways as members of other races.

(P.S. Polygamists aren't members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but they instead belong to churches that broke off from it.)
