It can cause mouth and throat cancer and other health problems...http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/chewing-tobacco/CA00019/UPDATEAPP=0
I just wanted to add (in response to your 'additional details') that your occasional use of tobacco may cause you to experience the harmful effects later rather than sooner (compared to those who use a can a day), but the effects are cumulative -- meaning that continued use will eventually cause problems. Also, tobacco is addictive no matter how often you use it...your body will start to crave the nicotine and you WILL want to use it more often than you do now. The fact is, tobacco is BAD in ANY FORM and in ANY AMOUNT. Do yourself a favor and QUIT NOW! Your body will thank you for it!

RE:
Is using dipping tobacco really that bad for you, or is it just a misconception?
I know people who go through a can a day or people who have done it for years and nothings ever happened. Is it really that bad for you?

I've been dipping for about 2 years now. I'm not going to lie to you and say it's great for you. There is the risk of tooth loss, and cancers of all sorts. From my 2 years of dipping, I have noticed some tooth recession, but it's not bad. My dad has been dippjng for 32 years and he is fine. To be straightforward, it's not as bad as people try to make it seem. People will try to scare you with the "what if's" but from my knowledge and research, there are it's risks but chances are very slim that they will happen to you. And once or twice a weekend is not bad at all. I dip about a can of day, so you're doing better than me, lol. Dip has its misconceptions that you are going to lose your jaw, and your teeth are going to be messed up. If you take care of your mouth you will be fine. Dip on!

In your mouth you can see the harm of dipping tobacco if you look around the "pouch" you keep it in. It is described as a "white corrugated (wrinkled) lesion" and if it gets worse, it can potentially develop into cancer. This isn't a misconception. If you are going to dip tobacco and risk your life be my guest. However, don't forget to take a picture of the area and watch it closely. Even better - have your dentist check it out.

These answers all come from non dippers. Obviously.
The truth is, you're more likely to get cancer in your mouth from smoking rather than dipping. I have been dipping for over 2 years now, and have not had ANYTHING cancer or disease-like happen to me. But I take care of my mouth. I brush my teeth three times a day, floss, and since with mouthwash. I visit the dentist regularly. Anyone who dips can tell you that as long as you are taking care of yourself, you can reduce the risk of cancer in your mouth. Cancer isn't something you just "get" it's not a cold, or some flu that just magically appears. Cancer takes time to appear.
I used to be a smoker. But I quit before I took up dipping. And I can honestly say that It does nothing to me the way cigarets dip, my cardio is good, my
Lungs are healthy, and my gums are not receding like many people say they will.
If you took a look at my mouth and my teeth, you'd never know I even dipped.

I've been dipping for 7 years and I asked my dentist about it, and he told me as long as you take care of your mouth, it won't hurt you. Dip has a TON of sugars in it and that is one of the main reasons it causes tooth decay. People that have lost teeth from it, probably don't brush their teeth like they should. It would almost be the equivalent of drinking 4-5 mountain dews a day and only brushing your teeth like 3 or 4 times a week

You know what. I love to chew. I had to quit a few days ago. You know why? I got my first adult panic attack. I think when I was like 2 years old I had a seizure. The only record of it, besides a crazy panic attack about a week ago. I'm 23, 24 on April. Dude, I've read about chewing and tobacco poisoning. I was SO restless and felt weird, kinda numb, I slightly cracked my back, and freaked out. I called the ambulance because I thought I was dying. First time I've ever called for my safety. Even after a week+ ago, and I stopped chewing about 3 days ago, there's a lot of tobacco left in my system and I am a little tweaked still. I chewed about a can a day, but didn't get too much sleep, sometimes a can and 1/6 of one. I worked or stayed up. Think of your body as a car, you're putting foreign things in it, it's going to f up somewhere. There's no direction, no put together, piece of paper. It's life. DUDE, I was like near paralyzed from chewing. I've chewed and smoked off and on, mostly smoked, then mostly chewed. Since I was 17. I've stopped a year or so, off, on. My eye site, thoughts, back, feeling, thinking is still f'd up from that day and I blame it on the nicotine and crap in the chew. Quit while you can. Don't GET ADDICTED TO SOMETHING that kisses your life goodbye. Sorry for caps. Have one to 2 drinks a day. Smoke pot, dude, chew will paralyze you. I couldn't sleep, lost breath, read about nicotine poisoning. You think there's "certain amount of nicotine" your body can consume... lol listen to what you just read. Man... I have nicotine, I'm addicted to chew, I chew on sun seeds now... Miss chewing, but I don't wanna die. Think about it, lemme know once you nearly die and get paralyzed like i nearly did how it went if you did not give it up. God bless and save you. Keep the phone close brother. Good luck to all! You got one book, don't f it up with one chapter.

YES! Tobacco causes cancer in any form. Dippers can get cancer of the mouth just like smokers can get lung cancer. It's illogical to say that you know a person who hasn't gotten cancer yet. I also know people who have smoked for a long time and they don't have lung cancer. But it's still very, very risky and dangerous. Tobacco is pointless. It just takes your money, your freedom, and your health. Stay away from that garbage.
