I live in Mpls and a pitbull killed a 7 year old boy, got him around the throat. I DO NOT blame the dog. He was chained up in the basement to a pole and it was a female with puppies.....what is wrong with these people!!!! Im very fearful for this breed cuz all of the stupid people who think its ok to own an aggressive breed dpg without proper socoalization and training......frustrated!!!

I also agree I personally dont believe that breeding has anything to do with aggressivness i think thats very much a learned behavior.

Dear God people are stupid! I have more fear for the future of the Human Race than I do for these dogs! Why would anyone chain up a dog in their basement! Especially when it had puppies! (Not like a chained animal isn't protective enough about its area!!!)

And I bet these Morons made this child care for the dog since they were obviously too dang lazy to care for it properly themselves!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

You sound like a pit bull lover. Was the child chained up or the female dog with puppies? Or the male dog? You said he.
Please don't tell me that the child was chained.
When are people going to stop getting dogs as a status prop.
Yes, I am frustrated because it seems that the people that get these pit bulls are proud of how aggressive they can be.
I have worked for Veterinarians for almost 30 years and pit bull owners are a different breed themselves. They only come in to get vaccines for their dogs when animal control makes them. And they are so offended when anyone mentions that they might be frightened. 2 years ago a child was mauled here in Ft. Worth. It is up to the owners, but they will never come through. God Bless the little boy in your town.

Ya know, the answer before mine said it all. They are loving dogs that would never hurt anyone. What a pile. But I am in the minority. (Then why did you write about a 7 yr old being killed?)

I would like to address the person Believer. How can you compare a fox study to a domestic dog? So, 3 generations of fox behavior proves what? They are different species.
Also you mentioned genetics and learned behavior -see your 3rd off - (not the same thing) I like pit bulls - I like Rotties and Dobermans and Shepards too.

Yeah I heard about it - wanna know how? I was walking with my two pits (on a leash) and a guy down the street came out of his house screaming at me to keep those dogs behind a fence. "Didn't you read the story in the news?" (we live in the state of washington - so since I don't get the Minnesota papers I did not hear about it!). Ohh but I learned.

First off - no one should chain their dog in the basement - that is an accident waiting to happen

Second off - no child - especially that young should be allowed to go play unsupervised with a chained-up dog

Third off - aggression is MOST definitely a genetic trait. While it is a learned behaviour so training can come in handy. You can pass on behavioural traits to off-spring. A scientific study was done a few years ago where wild foxes were pulled and separated based on their behavioural traits. Only docile foxes were bred (there was NO training, these animals were kept in large enclosures). Within 3 generations the off-spring were tame. So indeed - genetics does play a HUGE roll in how a dog acts. This is one reason why pitbulls are generally deemed animal-aggressive and not people aggressive. People aggressive pitbulls during the days of dogfighting, were culled from the line and killed. Handlers needed to be able to do whatever they needed to the dog - even in the middle of a fight. A human aggressive dog was not tolerated, it fact, they were ususally shot right there.

Aggression of any kind can be managed with proper training. But this takes a lot of work. If people only bred animals responsibly - ones with desired traits (e.g. calm natures, gentle natures) we wouldn't be seeing this. Think of the 8 pit bulls that were executed by he who shall not be named. They were killed because they had NO tendency to fight. Those dogs were the dogs that should be passing down their traits - not aggressive dogs.

Ya i know, i heard 'bout that. If you're defending the dog breed, than that's good! I am so protective of animals! And people abuse their pets in ways that are so horrible... I've heard about a guy that threw his little KITTEN through the wall just because it tried to climb up his X-mas tree! My kitten did that, my family thought it was cute, but we tried to not let him.
I play with my dog and cat all the time, and i even talk to my dog when i give her a bath. I just think animals are awesome. When I'm older i want to do something with defending animals, maybe there is such thing as being a lawer for animal rights. Anyway, that's what i think!

I hope i really helped!

I agree with everything you said EXCEPT the part about pits being an aggressive breed. I don't think they are any more inherently aggressive than a lot of other breeds. I've met too many pitts that were big babies..it's all in the handling.

God don't you just feel so bad for that little boy? And the dog. Things like this just shouldn't happen...

It's too bad American Staffordshire terriers get such a bad rap. The truth is that any breed of dog can engage in aggressive behavior if sufficiently provoked. I've been bitten more by small dogs than large ones.

my step-daughter owns two pitbulls. i trained them. to put it this way, our mailmen told me that trixie, the female, changed everything he ever thought about pitbulls. the are loving dogs. if you train any dog to be agressive they will be. it's all in the training. i pulled on her tail and ears and legs and made sure she never bit me or put her mouth on me. i didn't get to train brutus as long but taught my step daughter how to train him. they are wonderful as most are. you are more likely to be bitten by a german shepard or a lab then a pitbull. that's the statistics. look it up. pit bulls get a bad rap because the are trained to fight in a lot of cases. and that can be carried through the blood line.

The dogs are not bad. The owners are bad. A young lady in the next block had one and the only fear was of being "licked" to death. A very friendly and wonderful dog. I think everyone in a 10 block radius loved "Nillie".

blame the owners for their ignorance and mistreatment. Dog should not have been chained up in the basement with pups. they are probably breeding for fighting which is unconscionable
