Hold down the alt key and press 164.

They're called ascii characters. Here are the most common ones for spanish:
¿ alt. 168
ñ alt. 164
á 160
í 161
ó 162
ú 163
ñ 164
Ñ 165
é 130
É 144
¡ 173
¿ 168
ü 129

Not all keyboards use ASCII [only mostly Windows-based US keyboards would work], so be careful. On Macs, the escape codes are totally different, and so does international keyboards. It all depends on how your keyboard is mapped and programmed. So, Alt + 164 definitely isn't the only answer to get the tilde (~) over the n.

Alt + 0209 & Alt + 0241 are not the tilde symbol over the n as used in Spanish, it's a symbol like two small slashes used in Hungarian/Magyar.

Those characters given to you in the former answers are fine, in case those are all you need.

Now, if you want to know how to find by yourself a character not currently in your keyboard, and paste it into your text or learn the hot key to print it into your text (like the ones given to you, that start with Alt) you need to learn to use the "Character Map". utility, which is very simple.

The Character Map utility is free on all Windows machines and can be used to copy and paste accented letters and other foreign language characters characters into any Windows application. The Character Map is similar to the Insert Symbol tool found in some Windows applications such as Microsoft Word.

To open the Character Map utility:

1. Click on the Windows Start menu, on the lower left of your screen.

Then select the following:

Programs » Accessories » System Tools » Character Map.

NOTE: In rare cases, the Character Map may be in another location under Accessories or the Start menu.

the Character Map allows you to either copy and paste the character you need, directly into your document, or find the hotkey (alt + XXXX) to do it directly, without opening the Character Map.

Here's a page where you can see in detail, he steps to open the Character Map, even with images:

I hope this was useful to you.

Another way to get it, provided you have a Windows machine:
Switch your keyboard to United States-International.
Hold down the right ALT key and hit n.
BTW ALT164 didn't work on my machine!

hey, this works with me, i don't use any codes. press on your language bar and switch the language to spanish. when the language in your language bar is spanish the ñ is the ; (dotted comma) button. you dont have to press shift or anything, just press the dotted comma button and the ñ will appear :D

hope it works for you!
