The rule where you receive about $800 per child for up to 3 children as a single parent I believe.

It doesn't matter how much you make. If you have the children and claim them as a deduction, you get the $800.

Uh, actually the child tax credit is up to $1000 for each eligible child, not limited to three, and it's not just for single parents. The credit is not a refundable one, which means that at most it can reduce your tax to zero, but you don't get any leftovers back. Under some circumstances, if you don't owe enough tax to use the entire child tax credit that you would be eligible for, you can sometimes qualify for another credit called the additional child tax credit. That is refundable, so if you qualify you get the money even if you don't owe taxes.
