i want to take a box of british wine to a friend abroad. but i do not know if it is safe to pack the wine in a suitcase. will it survive a high altitude flight.?

Yes it will survive the altitude. All baggage compartements of the plane are pressurised like the passenger cabin. If you are using a hard shell suitcase just make sure that some compressable things are around the wine. In a soft suitcase pack it as suggested in another answer.
If it is not into an moslim country, customs shoulden´t be too much of a problem. US customs e.g. doesn´t charge below USD 10,00. A bottle of wine is approx 0.25 USD.

Be very wary & label it Fragile! There are potential issues.
Luggage is often roughly treated while un/loading.
Many countries have a limit on alcohol, (Canada 2 bottles).
Some customs will confiscate, or baggage men will pilfer.

Yes it will. speaking from experience, however it may not survive Customs at the other end! lol

Yes, and make sure you have it wrapped up in bubble wrap, and you might have to fill out import papers.
