See your nerve is dead, so they have to drill inside of the tooth and then they fill your tooth up with some kind of material of something (sorry I don't remember I'm only 10). Don't worry you won't feel a thing (I hope you don't I didn't feel anything) they will give you the Anesthesia, and then they will numb the area with a shot and I would say it takes about 1-2 hours I think. Hope this helps!!!

A root canal is a procedure to removed the infected nerve that is in your tooth. The dentist will drill through the top of your tooth and then use small metal files of various sizes to removed the infected nerve and shape the canals down the roots of your tooth. Because it is a molar, it may take a little while longer since some molars have 3 canals and some even have 4! If the infection is not too bad they may be able to finish the root canal in one sitting. If it needs time to heal up slightly before they seal it, they will pack the tooth with some medicine and put in a temporary filling. After it is all cleaned out, they will seal the tooth with a plastic material that is heated and melts into the canals. After that, they should put in whats called a post, a small metal screw looking thing, and build up a core of strong white material around it. These things will keep the tooth strong. After that, you will need an onlay or a crown to cover the tooth. Your dentist will let you know what you need. This is important because molars take a lot of pressure and the tooth will now need the support.

In it's simplest explanation,The dentist will drill thru the crown of the tooth, use a small metal tool to fish out the root for that tooth, then fill the tooth. The dentis uses novacainle of course to numb the area first. Figure around an hour for the proceedure.
