It's the place where Windows stores all of it's configuration information. A needlessly complex structure.

Yes, #1!!!
A good idea on paper, but it wasn't meant as the all-purpose dumping ground it has become.
Create a dodgy script, place a entry in the 'run' area of the Registry and bingo, you've got yourself a virus that runs on startup!
Wasn't meant to be like that, it was a configuration store as #1 has stated, but the more reckless types have used it to their advantage.

Many applications don't use the registry, however you have to use it to accomplish some effects in Windows. It's basically just a repository for system settings.
