There are many things you could do, but there are a few that I have tried that worked very well. Light a strong scented candle and place it close to you while you cut. Where your glasses if you have some, if not, wear sunglasses that are lightly tinted so you can still see very well while you are cutting. Chew mint flavored gum. Yeah, it actually works.

A couple of ways. First, if you have an exhaust fan over your oven, turn it on and cut under that.

Cutting under water will stop the fumes, but will also wash away some of the flavor and add water, which you might not want, depending on how you're going to cook.

You can wear goggles, but it's weird.

A very sharp knife helps, and thicker chunks help too, but how thick is really limited by what you're using it for.

You can also take breaks. Also, the type of onion matters. I think yellow onions are the worst for this - I like red onion for flavor, and it seems to be pretty good for cutting, and so are white onions.

chewing gum helps, also wearing swimming goggles. Beer goggles are very helpful!! Cut the onion in half and run under cold running water. Light a candle and put it close by while cutting. Or put it in the fridge for about 10-20 minutes!! Try any one of these they all work!! Good question I starred it!!
GOOD LUCK!!

I know that this is the wackiest of the ideas here, but I use a pair of Speedo Swim Goggles (a couple bucks at the sports store), and I know I look ridiculous when I'm wearing them and cutting onions, but I haven't shed a tear since I've been using this technique, and has even worked when I had slice up 15 lbs of onions to be used for garnish for burgers at a BBQ that we catered.......Enjoy!!! Hope you're having a great summer!!!

Before you cut onions, always be sure to keep them in the fridge. For some reason, it keeps the strong oders from forming, making us cry. Then pull out the onions as you need them from your crisper, and chop away. No tears or runny mascara ever again. Contrary to the theory they dry out in the fridge? They might just a bit, but not enough to ruin them, actually makes them a bit sweeter. Freezing them I don't advise as they get mushy. Placing them in the fridge keeps them crisp, hard. Try this and see if you shed tears. Keep them in the fridge at least over night before chopping, best 2 days, then chop. It really works.
