A few years ago, like about 3 or 4 years ago, my dog ate an entire box of chocolates, like a HUGE box of them... and he lived.. he wasnt even the least bit sick. How is this possible? I thought dogs died if they ate chocolate.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs if they eat too much of it. And this all depends on a lot of things. Different types of chocolate are more toxic than others. Bakers dark chocolate is the most toxic. And it also depends on weight. If you have a large dog, like a lab, he will have to eat a lot more of it in order for it to be toxic. Where as a 5 pound yorkie could die from only a small amount.
But just to be safe, I never let my dog eat any chocolate, and if she did accidentally eat a large amount I would take her to the vet.

.Well some types of chocolate don't affect dogs like the chocolate in brownies(my dog ate a whole tray of them without getting sick!!) But things like baking chocolate and dark chocolate are really bad for them. Baking chocolate can even kill them if not treated for immediately. You can also ask your vet about it they usually have laxatives for your dog in case they do eat the bad kind of chocolate.

It takes a LOT of chocolate to be lethal. In small quantities, it may make the dog vomit or have diarrhea, but won't have long-term health effects. White chocolate is the least toxic, followed by milk chocolate. Baker's chocolate are more toxic than white or milk chocolates.

Here are some links about the toxicity of chocolate:

That whole theory of dogs dieing the moment they eat chocolate, tomatoes, garlic, onions, etc is highly over popularized. I have fed dogs chocolate since I let my nasty little peke lick my slowpoke when I was 2 or 3 and not one of them has ever died from it. I have also given them lots of spaghetti and garlic bread, milk, cream, chocolate ice cream, etc. Never killed a one of them. I had one little red peke that loved chocolate chip ice cream. So I gave her some often.
It's not healthy for a dog to eat 5 pounds of chocolate at all. But it's not healthy for me to drink 4-5 espressos either. And neither me or the dog will die from a little chocolate.

I had a standard poodle that ate a large hershy's kiss one year - she lived too. I think it depends a lot on the size of the dog.

It doesn't necessarily mean that all dogs will die if they eat chocolate, but what it does mean is that later on in life they could have problems.

maybe he passed them through his system normally because he had a very strong immune system. just like you hear people were shot but survived that's just one of those lucky things that happen. but just like the people who got shot, there can be long-term things that happen and for your dog it might have intestinal problems or seizures when it gets older. so talk to your vet
