Its extremely powerful for a handgun, about the most power you can have between the hands in fact.
But must be kept in perspective that it is still a handgun and for whatever calibre a handgun is there is a far more powerful rifle available somewhere since rifles generally use bottle necked cartrdiges, that is with a far wider and longer case beneath the bullet.
By comparison
500SW handgun 440gn bullet at 1750fps for 2800ftlbs.
30-06 Rifle 180gn bullet at 2750fps for 3000ftlbs.
500 A-square elephant gun, 600gn bullet at 2500fps for 8328ftlbs
585 Gehringer, 750gn bullet at 2600fps for 11000ftlbs
50BMG 660gn bullet at 3080fps for 13500ftlbs.
So the 500-585 rifles are 3-5 times more powerful than the 500S&W.
I am not sure what type system you are using for body arnmour but the 500SW will not penetrate hard armour types.
It will be less effective than a 30-06 for that.
As to killing an elephant a lot of guns will with carefully picked shots from side on. Whether it can stop a charge through 18" of frontal bone skull is what makes an elephant gun though and the 500SW is not reliable for that.

A shotgun marked to fire 3" magnum shells can fire 3" magnum shells. If it isn't marked to fire 3" magnum shells, it can't fire 3" magnum shells. A 3" shell marking on the barrel means that it can safely chamber and fire 3" shells. If the barrel doesn't have that marking, it won't safely chamber and fire 3" magnum shells. A 3" marking is NECESSARY for shooting 3" magnum shells. How many more times do we need to mention 3" magnums and the markings that say 3" shells before you get it? 3" Magnum 3" Magnum 3" Magnum 3" Magnum 3" Magnum 3" Magnum 3" Magnum

There's not much for personal protection that's gonna stop it. If for some crazy reason it couldn't pierce a vest (flexible) the impact alone would do so much internal damage you would certainly die. If you find yourself staring down the barrel of one you got some choices. Kiss your @ss goodbye, Beg for your life or fire back and hope you got the faster trigger finger.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxLmiYiwvus&mode=related&search=.500%20S

Over 3,000 ft/lbs with some loadings.
Powerful enough to kill an elephant, reportedly.

Ya, I would rather be on the back end of that one, but the 50BMG is much more powerful.
Oooh, I just searched, and the 50 caliber was banned in California Jan 1st 2005. Well, that sucks. Check your state before flashing that thing around (if you've got one).
But I would check out the BMG before you buy. It has been used as a counter-sniper weapon; did they say from two miles?
