Our local county jail has a volunteer Chaplain who spends greater than 40 hours a week ministering to 160 prisoners. He eats free meals while there but is not compensated any other way. Would someone offer ideas as to how he may get some pay. Chaplains typically make an anual salary of $40K. The county has no funding available for a chaplain but everyone readily admits the jail must have one.

It is possible that a grant could be written for such a purpose. There are numerous religious organizations that would happily donate money for such a cause. Look around, check on the Internet or talk to local church officials. There is money out there, just have to look for it.

I once worked at a private school where none of us teachers made much money (nor did the secretary or school director). When there was an event in any of our lives (someone's husband graduated from night school, a teacher needed neonatal care, minor emergencies caused a difficult month...), we had this old brown envelope that we passed around along with an appropriate card, and we basically took up a collection for the specific person.

It was a great pick-me-up for the person on the receiving end, and the rest of us felt good for being able to help out.

So, maybe, if you can't find some other way to get this guy paid, maybe you could all pass an envelope around and take up a collection of donations for the guy.
