Stop them from starting. Many tray items, when you right click on them, will bring up a "Configuration" option. Select that and see whether there's an option to not have that particular piece of software automatically start. Otherwise, check your Startup folder and see if they are started from there.
You do have to be alittle careful. If it's a Windows Indexing function, you probably want that run. If it's a Kazaa widget in the Tray, just remove it.

If they keep reappearing after telling them not to with the 'right click' you have to fiddle with your registry.
Windows demands that MicroSoft is your one and only. It takes some hard core learning to get around the Startup without changing your familiar settings. It is worth a hardcore nights searching and filling up a NotePad file with odd commands. You must learn the details yourself because each of us has a different setup right from the day we brought this foul box home!
My opinion is to grind through the serious stuff from scratch and work up to sheer confidence. The bad news is that most of us aren't half-way there and those who know the true grail are laughing at us right now. The best reason to overcome! (you have five minutes, starting now......)
