I just got a Sony STR-DG710 AV Receiver. I also have a plasma TV with a DVI input.

---THE CONFIGURATION---

I have a DVD player and a HD Cable Box.

The DVD player is connected to the receiver with COMPONENT cables and an OPTICAL audio cable.

The HD cable box is connected to the receiver with an HDMI cable.

The receiver is connected to the with a HDMI to DVI-D cable. This cable is connected to the HDMI Out connector on the receiver. This is the only connection to the TV.

---HERES THE PROBLEM---

When I set the receiver to the input for the cable box, I get video but there is NO SOUND coming though the speakers.

As an experiment, I tried connecting an optical cable to the HD box, and re-assigning it to the same input. There was still no sound.

HOWEVER, when I changed the optical assignment to a different input, then switched the receiver to that input, the sound worked fine (but obviously there was no video).

ALSO the DVD player input has sound but NO video.

Any ideas?

Unless your AV receiver has internal video DACs, there is no way for analog component video to be output via HDMI (which is a digital interface).

Try this simple connection first
HD Box to TV DVI - via DVI-to-HDMI cable
DVD player to TV - via component cables
digital audio from HD Box to AVR via optical (or coax)
Digital audio from DVD to AVR via optical (or coax)

Your receiver should be able to get dig. audio via HDMI from the HD box, but either there are problems with the HD Box configuration or your AVR setup.

TV guy's suggestion is good. You always want to pump the best video signal straight to the TV (usually), and the best audio signal straight to the receiver (AVR).
NEw Home theater receiver will have HDMI throughput, but no conversion.
Your cable box can definitely do it. If your tv has DVI, it almost always has component too.
