Anthropologists postulate 5 possible origins of religion in early societies; they may operate alone or in any combination of 2 or more.
1) Explanatory—Early man having no scientific explanation of how nature worked, had to postulate some unseen ‘spirit or god (s)’.
2) Immortality—This gives us at least the hope of eternal life; pretty straightforward.
3) Economic theory—It works something like this: if we show the ‘corn god’ we respect him with a sacrifice, he will be good to us and make the corn grow-pure economics.
4) Political control—the upper classes working together with the ‘priest’ or ‘magician’, to keep the peasants working for them.
5) Neurochemical—there are neurotransmitters in the brain which give us a sense of’ awe’ before nature. Drugs like LSD and other psychedelics can induce this state even in atheists-I can attest to this.

Pioneers WHERE?
The Hiram Key is yet another example of "Von Daaniken’s syndrome" where wishful thinking and pre-determined conclusions replace facts in the presentation of opinion masquarading as theory. It is an entertaining read, and certainly presents some interesting ideas. But its presentation of opinion as fact does both Freemasonry and the academic study of masonic history a disservice.

No one actually knows. Probably the result of some cave dweller getting hit by a bolt of lightning while he was stealing someone's food.
