My 2 year old daughter really loves cats. She has been asking for a while for one to bring home. We used to have a cat which I loved but we unfortunately had to find it a new home when we had our son as he didnt take to it too well :( How can I talk hubby round to the idea ......... he is not budging!

Your 2 year old daughter is far too young to assume any kind of responsibility.
You got rid of your last cat because of your son.
Your husband doesn't want a cat.

This really doesn't sound like a family who should be getting a cat at this point in time.

Please do a cat the favor of not talking your husband into getting one. You had to rehome one cat because of your son. Did you get rid of your son or do you still have him? If you still have him then why would you want to go through this again, only to find he can't adjust and once again you have to put a cat through the trauma of finding a new home for it. It is very stressful for a cat to be moved. Your daughter is two years old for pete's sake. Next week she'll probably want a pony or an elephant. Are you going to get her those too? It's not her that wants one, its you. Two year old children make a wonderful Kodak moment with pets but it ends there. They don't know how to act with them and the poor animal usually gets poked in the eyes, picked up by its tail and chased around the house by an excited child. None of which is good for the cat. Please rethink your options. There are toy cats even some that purr. Get her one of those at least it will give you an idea of how long her interest in it lasts and you will save a cat a lot of stress and trauma.

I am sorry but I don't think you should force your husband into having a cat. If something goes wrong i.e. the cat starts peeing, scratching the furniture it may really p**s your husband off and then just cause arguments resulting in you having to give up another cat. I volunteer at an animal shelter and we see too many cats being surrendered because people didn't consider the responsibility enough. I also think 2 years old is too young to be taking care of a cat and next week she will probably want a puppy, a rabbit and so on.....

think about it allot cats r a responsibility and can be hard to take care of. if your daughter i tell her if u took the decision of buying her a cat to help around the house she can do dishes well maybe not dishes but simple thing a 2 year old can do and more with OUT u needed to ask her to do it. u would also need to change the litter around 1 a week BUT u would need to take out the cat po*p and urine everyday that a small task that has to be done !!!. u also need to think about food the cat needs fresh food and water everyday. it costs allot of money when comes time to buy litter food or even toys. the needs to feel loved u cant be left alone he will feel lonely. the problem is that when your daughter will get older she will loss interest in the cat and will just ask for another one !!

think about this and it can take time!!

hope it works

tell you hubby that cats are not that bad and you could cover up the sofa with that plastic stuff so the kitten/cat wont be able to scratch it up. let your daughter have a responsibility of brushing it and other easy stuff if he still doesnt take to the idea tell him you or ur daughter will take care of all the responsibilities like feeding, cleaning litter box,brushing,playing,ect.,ect.Tell him about all the wonderful things about a cat like not haveing to walk it or giving it a bath or taking it outside to pee.

hope this helps and hope you get a kitten/cat :)

What's happened to that son?

2 year old's REALLY love lots of things. Big f##ing deal. A cat will live, with care, until this kid is off to college. Will her REALLY love take care of the $1000s that the cat will require during that time? It will cost that. Go to the store and price cat food and litter, call a vet and check out their prices.

Do everyone a favour and buy her one of those toys that simulates a live animal.

It sounds more like you want a cat, and the fact that your 2 year old also wants one is your bargaining chip.

If the desire to have one truly is your 2 year old's idea, then will it be your 2 year old who teaches the cat to use the litterbox, cleans the poop, feeds it, waters it, takes it to the vet, etc.?

Can you blame your husband for not wanting another cat? The last one didn't work out, and now you want to let your children get attached to another pet that also may not work out?

What's to stop your son taking against this new cat?
I think a 2 year old child is a bit young to be 'helping' with the care.

I think that it would be hard to manage this situation you would have to ex[plain to your two year old not to pull on the cats tail ,because if somebody such as your two year old daughter is hurting the cat or pulling on it's tail the cat could turn mean and scratch/bite her or anybody.

It depends on his reasons for not budging, of course. Perhaps he's concerned that your son won't get along with a new cat. As much as I love cats, people come before pets.
