I'm 18, almost 19, and still trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. I was thinking about a career in anthropology or forensic science, but every time I bring it up, my parents (mostly my dad) say that since I'm not good at math, that I'll never be able to get a job like that. He always tells me I need to settle and go to trade school and work with computers or something. But, I don't want to. It feels like he wants me to settle and be unhappy with his job, just like he and my mom did. What would you do if you were in a similar situation?

If math is a problem in reality then why not take some tutorals and attempt to do better in this subject. Dreams can become reality if we have enough faith in ourselves. If an anthropologist or forensic scientist is your goal then I say go for it. Tell your parents that although you are proud of what they have accomplished in their lives that you have your own goals and plan on achieving them regardless of how difficult they may seem. If you can speak with someone in the fields your interested in then try and do so and they may even be mentors for you and give you lots of valuable advise. Best of luck and I suggest following your dreams if realistic and being happy with the choices you make.

I had the same problem at one time. Family wanted this and I wasn't sure yet. First do understand it isn't that they want you to be unhappy they want to make sure your stable in a career that isn't going to go away with time. However what they want doesn't matter as much as what you want or will want. Happiness is the key to success at lest that is what I think. Make your choices and respect there suggestions but never, ever settle. You don't know where life will take you or how it will take you there.

Do what you want to do. I wasnt good at math in high school either and I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in biology. You just have to try to learn it and you will.

If you get a job that you didnt want in the first place, youll hate it for the rest of your life and you wont want to go back to school again. Forget what your parents say, that is absolutely horrible advice from a father. Do not listen to it.

Honey, it is your life, if you don't try at something, later down the road you will always wonder "what if". Just because they aren't happy with what they are doing doesn't mean they need to bring you down. If that is what you want to do, then I say go for it! So what if you aren't the best in math, when you go to school you will have teachers there to help you every step of the way.

Follow your dream, but be able to back it up. Do you have the means to go to college right now. Then go, there are tutors available to help you with the math. Be respectful of your parents though. They just want what is best for you, even if they are a little misguided.

Who cares what your parents want? You are the one who has to decide. It is your future, not theirs. Your father should be encouraging you, not discouraging you. It sounds to me like your father doesn't want you to do better than he did at your age.

Forensic Science is a fascinating profession. It doesn't matter that you are not a brainiac in math. I'm not, and it never stopped me.

I think that whatever profession you truly want, you will be successful at it. It may take hard work, but, it can be done. You are a smart young person to be thinking about your future. Good luck.

Follow your dreams but you should start soon. You don't become an anthopologist or work in forensic science overnight.
