My uncle is asking me to sign the papers for 2 families of relatives that I have never met before. My family is not very tight and I don't know anything about these people so my initial reaction is that it is a bad idea. However, my uncle is giving me crap about it being for family. Does anyone have any details on the legal aspects or any personal bad experiences of being sued by the people you sponsor or having your wages garnished if the family applies for public benefit programs? Thanks.

That's exactly how I feel so I don't plan to do it, but I wanted to get some other viewpoints as I know my decision will not be popular with my uncle and will likely cause a permanent rift in our relationship. Thanks for the reply.

Honestly, I wouldn't do it. You said yourself you don't even know these people. Just because they may technically be family does not give you any insight on how reliable they are.

Whether they might sue you or not depends on their character. However, if you sign this affidavit, you're technically agreeing to sponsor them financially. That means if they do become a public burden, YOU will have to pay up.

You will be responsible for people you don't know. That is not fair. You could get into trouble for harboring people not of this country. Your uncle is too demanding and wanting something for nothing in return. TWO families? TWO families!!!! That is a crazy idea of his. What is HE doing for the TWO families? Don't do it. Save your sanity.

You are effectively stating that you will be both legally and financially responsible for these people if they can't make it on their own. You don't say how old you are or if you have the money to assist these people if they need it. I would give this a lot of thought and then say no.

I really think your instinct is right. I am by no means an expert on immigration laws, but I feel that you would be more or less agreeing to kind of supervise them. Your uncle is asking too much of you.
