I think that the diagnosis of ADD and ADHD have actually made it easier for lazy parents to manage what are actually normal children. Put them on drugs, mellow them out, ahhhh parenting made easy!! I'm certain that some kids do have these issues but it is far over diagnosed and way over treated. Kind of like how they have taken the normal occurance of PMS and now made it PMDD that requires drugs for treatment. That kills me!!! I agree with you completley!

I somewhat agree with you. Being a teacher I have come to learn that each child is special and unique in their own way. From my expereince I have found that there are alot of parents out there that use the phrase ADHD as an excuse for their child's behavior. However, I have seen some extreme cases where children do not have self control over their body and they become very upset when they see that they are different from their peers. Everyone has chemical imbalances there are many children out there with ADHD that strive to do their best but somethings in their body doesn't allow them to. I had a student in my room one year that went from hitting the other children, rolling on the floor, throwing math blocks at me during a lesson and uncontrollable laughing (which is not typically for a third grader to act like at school) to a student who sat at his desk quietly completeing is work when he was diagnosed and became medicated. He is a great example because his behavior effected his opportunity to learn. When the behavior begins to effect the students learning in a negative way that is when a parent should become concerned.

Okay, well I do and I don't agree with you.
On the one hand, yes children ARE naturally loud and energetic (don't know about naughty though, mine aren't deliberately naughty, but do do the wrong thing from time to time, I don't regard that as naughty though, just part of growing up and learning).
On the other hand, I do believe that ADHD is a legitimate condition. I definitely think that it has been overdiagnosed though.

I agree to an extent. I believe that there are way too many children misdiagnosed with ADHD. Children with food allergies/sensitivities are often diagnosed with ADHD, where really there symptoms are just side effects of foods they're eating. There's a lot of other conditions, too, that children have and doctors just apply the ADHD label to them because it's easy.
I think people should definitely get a second opinion to find out if ADHD really is what is causing their children to misbehave, or find out if it's something else.

Well, i think some conditions exist and should be treated... but i think kids are under stimulated and fed terrible junky foods that cause hyper reactions. Also some parents and teachers are more tired from the demands of life and they have less patience than ever before with children and are quick to look for ways to 'calm the wild ones'.
... but besides that.. yes! kids are loud and energetic and naughty.. just like they should be!!! i agree. i love little bratty-brats (ie: kids :P)

In my personal opinion ADHD is a legitamate disorder BUT I do think it is overdiagnosed, diagnosed WAY to early in some cases, and overused as an excuse for bad behavior in children.
We expect younger and younger children to be able to sit at a desk or table at school and not fidget and learn with little breaks in between to run and get their energy out. When a kid can't do that BAM they begin to get the label ADD/ADHD. Whether diagnosed at that time or not its in the backs of peoples minds that this kid can't sit still and is a "problem child". Children need to run and jump and explore theier worlds in lots of hands on activities not have work sheets, reading and math crammed down their throats all day long!
Also I truly believe that children are being fed junk day in and day out! Even foods we *think* are good for our kids may not be. But when you read labels you will see foods are crammed full of unhealthy preservatives, lots of sodium and sugar!
I do think that people should try alternative things to meds but when all else fails then meds are appropriate and should be used to help a child achieve his/her potential at school and into their future, as well as using behavior modification :)

no i don't agree, i think ADHD is a real medical condition, HOWEVER i do think it is overdiagnosed and over medicated.
i feel the same way with ADD as well, and many other conditions.
EDIT: i just felt the need to add this, my daughter has aspergers, we fought a diagnosis for a long time because we did not want to admit something might be wrong, also we figured it was just us, not disciplining enough etc. so we went through everything, we tried EVERYTHING before even taking her in to a doctor because we just felt it was us, we beat ourselves up for it for a long time trying to fix what we did wrong... and all this time our daughter suffered because we were naive enough to believe that there were no real problems. she was so miserable, she has no social skills even though we offered her every opportunity to play with friends etc, she has no safety awareness, all sorts of things... and she suffered with that long enough. if i were naive enough to think ALL of these disorders are fake or made up, she would still be suffering! and i am not going to allow her to do that!

To a degree. I think it is overused WAY too much. However, there are a lot of kids out there with this condition. For them, I think the medication is a lifesaver. But I think putting every kid who is active on medication is doing a great disservice to them.

Yes and No......
I do get tired of hearing it over used but I think it is a very serious condition and the children that truly have it are very lucky to have medicine and other things to help. I get tired of teachers and parents being quick to label every child that is not picture perfect, but for those that truly have issues I think it is great to have options!

It's overdiagnosed. Parents who have no clue about how to raise and discipline their bratty kids WANT an excuse. They'd rather medicate than give a good spanking (which isn't child abuse if you know what you're doing and don't lose your mind). When I was a kid and we "acted out", we got our hind ends smacked. I've grown up just fine.
