Former Sailor here 22 yrs Retired. I went in the Navy in NOVEMBER 1978 but in Orlando Florida.
Don't let those recruiters fool you. You tell them either put it in writing or stop lying. Yes E2 and E3 are possible before and after bootcamp. Usually High School ROTC or a good score on your ASVAB.
More importantly do not let them send you to the Navy without an "A" school. Find a job suited for you. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) or whatever they are calling it now are designed to find your natural glitch. For instance these test may show you have a very good ability to be a mechanic. Whatever your scores show find something within those scores and take a skill into boot camp with you. Whatever you do...DON'T GO WITHOUT AN "A" SCHOOL.
If you have already committed think again. You have only committed to going. They make you believe you are obligated when in fact you are not in until you actually go to boot camp. When you go through the processing center you will once again raise your right hand and be sworn in.
Remember NO matter what they promise you, YOUR CONTRACT IS BINDING, they don't have to give you anything but what YOU SIGN.
YOU Want E-2 or E-3 make him/her put it in writing or you may want to look else where.
I loved the Navy and good people are hard to find. Don't let them make you a quota and not a Sailor like you want to be.
Good Luck, Fair winds and following Seas SHIPMATE!!!!

Winter in "Great Mistakes" is pretty brutal... but you'll be plenty active to keep yourself warm :) The biggest pain is that it's hard to keep a good shine on those boondockers when they are trudging through snow/slush.
As for the rank... there are certain schools/programs that will come with automatic rank and or advancement. For example, I joined the Navy as an E3 and got an automatic promotion to E4 upon completion of a school that I was sent to.
However, ANY promises of rank or specific schools MUST be clearly spelled out in your enlistment contract. Anything that your recruiter or anyone else promises you doesn't mean anything unless it is in that contract. There will be a specific place in the contract that lists everything you have been guaranteed. If it isn't there, it doesn't exist.
If you are in the Delayed Entry Program, you have already signed a contract... but that is an inactive reserves contract. You'll sign another one for active duty at MEPS. This is the one that matters.
The bottom of the very first page of the enlistment contract contains the following clause: "The agreements in this section and attached annex(es) are all the promises made to me by the Government. ANYTHING ELSE ANYONE HAS PROMISED ME IS NOT VALID AND WILL NOT BE HONORED. "

You can become and E3 after bootcamp if you
A.) Have 48 or more college credits
B.) Get a certain number of referrals (People you send to the recruiter who end up joining.)
Those are the only ways I know of, but there could be more.
As for leaving in the winter, I have no idea, I leave Feb. 2008. Good luck!

Well congratulations on joining the Navy! now to answer your question, I went to boot camp in July so it was very hot! but my best friend went to boot camp in December and she told me that the worst part of going to boot camp in the winter, besides the cold, was when they IT you (you will find out what this is soon enough!!) the sweaters that you have to wear under your utilites become so itchy and hot that it is unbearable! As for being an E3 when you graduate, make sure that you have proof of that, like say in your contract or wherever, because if its not in your contract then it doesnt exist. and no you do not graduate boot camp as an e2. there are ways in boot camp to advance from an e1 to an e2 but if you dont meet and pass all the criteria then no you will not get advanced. make yourself stand out. that will get you advanced. try to be a section leader, or a yeomen or even the rpoc or aroc. hope this helps! good luck!

I am retired Navy.I went to basic training in Great Lakes in the summer of 79.The winter there can be harsh to some degree becasuse its consider a wet cold. The Navy will provide you ample clothing for that particular season.Just has a precaution drink plenty of fluids. You wont shiver has much.Water.In most instances you can be promoted to an E3.The promotion will come in time.Accept the E2 pay grade. You'll do just fine. After basic training you'll go onto APT Apprectieship Training another two weeks after basic training.Good luck.

I didnt go through bootcamp in the winter, but i went through "A" school-- and yes, like they say, it was brutal- after 5 min of walking, ur face turns numb.. But you should be fine-- just dont slip on the ice- Its possible to go into bootcamp as an e3 to get from e2 to e3 in bootcamp- u really have to show them ur the most outstanding sailor in ur group. only `1 or 2 get choosen for this, so this is not hte way to go- to make sure you get e2 at least- or e3 b4 u go into bootcamp, tell ur recruiter to put it into ur contract-- and make sure u look at it b4 u sign it. There is no gurantee, unless if its in ur contract.

Where are you from? Winter in Great Lakes was no different than winter in Cleveland. Which is hell. But it prepares you to be grateful for the horrifying summers when you get shipped to VA Beach, or you know... some other sandy place. Don't worry, they don't make you sleep outside or anything! You'll be fine! And if you do well, try to become section leader and you will get recommended for E3... And it only goes up from there. my man made E5 within a year. Good Luck SR!

If you get more people to join you should get credit for them and this helps move you up the ladder. That is if the Navy does it any were close to the Marines. Just make sure you get credit the recruiter can say yea no trouble and then take or give it to someone else. You have to have your SSN on this person package. The recruiter is also going to get credit but you also. As for boot in Nov should not be 2 bad I think Jan and Feb would be worse. Had a BIL and a nephew go through up that way. Thanks

one does NOT automatically become an E2 or an E3 after Pass in Review. You must be recommended for it by your RDCs or complete some quals beforehand. to get E3 you need I want to say 45 or 60 College credits, or complete some other prerequisites like your 11 General Orders and get some people to enlist as well. somepoepl may get meritriously promoted due to exceptional performance at Boot Camp.
everything is done indoors now, at most you will be marching outisde in da cold and da snow from one toasty warm building tothe next.

I spent a winter at Great lakes and found it to be brutal. The cold coupled by the wind off the lake makes for frozen fingers and toes. Make sure to dress in layers.
