My cat has toughs of fur near her belly that will not come out or a part when I give her a bath. How can I get the toughs out?

I don't appreciate stupid comments... My cat is 11 years old, so could this possibly be just part of getting older?

Yes this is part of her getting older as she has less oils in her coat and more difficulty in reaching certain places to groom effectively. If she allows you to trim them then great. Depending on how bad they are you may be able gradually groom them out with a brush. If they are small you may find that after a while you can simply pull them out with your fingers. If she is literally covered with mats then you may need to take her to the vet or call a local animal grooming company to see if they are able to do it.

Earthbath natural pet shampoo with tea tree and aloe vera is good for a Kitty's skin and you can try using a salmon oil supplement, this will help keep a good balance of oils in her skin.

I hope this helps :)

It sounds like it's matted up. Don't use a scissors, more owners end up cutting into their cat's skin trying to get these out than can do it properly.

Call your vet and ask to speak to a technician. A tech visit isn't chargeable, you'd only be charged for the use of their clipper shears--they can remove the mats for something like $4 (that's the cost in Milwaukee). It takes only a few seconds and the cat will have some fur missing, but the mat will be gone and not pulling on the skin making the cat uncomfortable.

Well if she lets you give her a bath then you should be able to trim some of them away. It's best to have someone help you - someone to hold her gently down and someone to trim carefully with scissors.

Are these tuffs actually clumps of knotted fur or are they just weird growing hair? As long as they aren't knotted up or otherwise tangled she doesn't need them removed. If you can run your fingers through them don't worry about it.

If you do need to trim her, make sure you are really quiet and calm and afterwards give her lots of love and kitty treats. To prevent this problem you can comb her with special brushes to rid her of old hair and prevent tangles if she is long haired - especially if she goes outside.

How old is she? Some cats get very matted as they age because their skin produces oil that makes the fur stick together. This is an issue for your vet, for sure!

She might not let you get at the belly with round tipped scissors. You can make an apt. with the vet, and they will give her a sedative and while she is snoozing they will shave the clumps.
