It's for my niece, she lives in Australia and I live in the UK. I haven't seen her for 3 years and I want to take her a present whan I visit. She's not very girly or into dolls but likes making things. Any suggestions, especially from people with their own children?

How about some things from here in the uk that arent available over there?
You could get books with stories from uk, such as loch ness monster etc perhaps books or activities to do with castles or royal family, something different.
A piece of jewellery, something she can keep suh as a jewellery box.
Even making up a basket of sweets/snacks that are available in the uk but not Australia would be a nice gift.

Klutz books are great. They are craft activities in a great all-inclusive book format. Or try Littlest Pet Shop or My Little Pony - both seem to be big hits with the non-doll girls.

Adding this - I almost forgot, the BEST face paints are Snazaroo from the UK. You can get a small starter kit and it has patterns for the kids to follow. We got some for my daughter when she turned 8 and she loves them.

My daughter is seven too!

Try any of the local stores for craft kits, there are a million to choose from; sewing, jewelry making. paint, ceramics, stained glass, etc. A girl this age would like any of them. What about an Easy Bake Oven.?.?.?

Something she could keep would be nice too. A necklace or bracelet would be nice and there are a million to choose from! I have seen some that even say niece!

Most of the suggestions you have gotten are good, 7 year old girls are really into making crafts, and more grown up stuff like jewelry and fancy stationary. My suggestion though is since you are visiting her from another country, you bring her some cool stuff specifically from the UK...think "If she were visiting me, what would she like to take home?" It would be much cooler for her to have something she couldn't get at home.

Get a big craft box with bobbly things, jiggly eyes, pipe cleaners, shiny stuff, etc etc in it. Also: lots of stickers, wiggly scissors, shaped hole punches. If she's in Aus she might also appreciate some really English things, you know, Union jack stickers and all that jazz. Do you have a Paperchase near you? My daughter loves that shop!

Last week my daughter had her belated birthday party (she is 6 and a half) and we just did loads of art in the garden. Best party ever! They all loved it, and cleaned off with a big water fight at the end!

I know it sounds a bit boyish but how about going to argos and buying some lego or something? I Really loved making magnetic models out of Magnetix for kids! There are lots of different Magnetix sets - here is one from argos:-

She likes making things!! yay! Go to a craft store like Michael's- they have plain wooden boxes of all sizes. Then get some paints and some cute stickers. She can decorate the boxes however she wants... and maybe you can help her! I did this for my 7 yr. old neice and she LOVED it. She still uses one box for all of her barbie shoes, and the other one for her earrings. She thinks of her Auntie everytime she uses them. Fun :)~
