Beverages are really the only stuff that a restaurant can sell to make a decent margin. With all the "all you can eat" specials, and the larger portions abounding, profits from food sales are weak.

Without profit, a restaurant goes out of business. Beverage sales are the easiest way to generate the highest margin with the least labor and overhead.

Buck the system; drink water, instead. It's much, much better for you.

When I worked in a retail store with fountain drinks, our mark up was incredible - now this was a few years back, but for a 64 oz Coke/Pepsi the cost was approximately 12 cents (that included the syrup, cups, lid, straw, water and electricity) and we sold it for 69 cents. Restaurants charge even more.

So, yes, they make quite a bit of money off the fountain drinks.

No kidding, Epic! The restaurants get away with gouging the customers on drinks. For example, I like to have an MGD (Miller Genuine Draft) with supper at a Mexican restaurant. That's $2.50. However, you can buy a 6-pack for $5-6 at the grocery store. The same applies to soft drinks, coffee, tea. It's outrageous.

Yes, but bear in mind that restaraunts only make a very small profit on the food - there is so much waste and safe storage expenses - plus the overhead of the waitstaff. They gotta make a living, you know.

I guess it depends. I drink water at restaurants because it is free. I drink juice at home, and when I purchase fizzy drinks I purchase them on sale, because I like Pepsi and it is one of the most expensive drinks there is.
