You have to claim you're Christian or you won't get any votes. Whether you live up to those claims after becoming President is another thing entirely.

Yes, you do. So many voters believe the president should reflect their personal beliefs that if an Atheist ran for president they'd not vote for them on that basis alone.
Non Christian and Non-Protestant Christian candidates would face an uphill battle.
When Kennedy was elected - it was a HUGE thing that he was Roman Catholic. There have been no RC candidates elected since.

Unfortunately, a majority of Americans aren't real bright, and are easily manipulated by those who profess to have the same beliefs as they do. Now that the Republican Party has thrown their hats in with those who are pushing for Christian Dominion, it'll be even tougher for us to elect an honest, non-fascist President. You can read more about this disturbing agenda here:

Up with Christianity... down with the Constitution and all that it stood for!

Today and in the past, yes. Thomas Jefferson was our most irreligious president, but the was long ago - he was the third president.
Hopefully in the future we will outgrow our superstitions.
And yes, every candidate knows that they must be seen as a church-going believer, so they all become church regulars early in their career.

It's not a constitutional requirement but it is, unfortunately, a political reality that a candidate be religious. That is, of course, if it's the "right" religion.

There is a law that you don't have to be religious, but the majority of the United States are Christian and we will not vote for an Atheist.
Because many Christians believe Atheists are in no position to create laws on a Christian land.
Adolf Hitler played it smart. He pretended to be a Christian to sway the Christian voters.
