If you can have a checking account, you should be able to have a debit card. Is there an age limit on checking accounts?

He must be 18 to be the primary account holder on a checking account. In regards to obtaining a debit card, if he his 16 or older and is a joint account holder on a checking account with someone who is over 18 then he would be able to get a debit card in his own name. (This might be dependent upon the bank, but I know this is the policy at mine). Just ask your banker.

If he has got money in the Bank then there is no reason why he can't have a debit card, or if you have a debit card, you could get him a card on your account, but remember that it will be your money that he is using.

Is your son responsible enough to have a debit card?
Before you give him one tied to a bank account where he could end up in real trouble, you might want to try one of the prepaid credit cards. They can only spend what's available on the card. No NSF fees.
