Out of respect one should always remove their shoes when entering another persons residence. Even when the person says it is unnecessary I insist on doing so because this is correct manners.

Just ask. Asians popularized the 'shoes off indoors' deal, but it is all over. I have several European friends that, when you come over, you leave your shoes on a special box in the coat closet, and they have slippers for visitors. That is Scandinavian, Baltic, and few Russians. Point being that Asians don't have a monopoly this one.
Not only does it keep the floors clean, but it sure makes guests feel comfortable and wanted!
So if you want to be as polite as you can, just ASK THEM, and if they deny the need to remove your shoes (are their floors and carpets VERY clean?) get them to tell you its okay THREE times before you walk shod through the house. In this day and age, that should cover you, as some folks will just say, 'no no, it's fine,' to not inconvenience their guest. The third time they have to fess up. If you are really lucky, they will have slippers for you!

Different cultures have different acceptable practices about this. Where I used to live, it was typical to take off your shoes in the house, so I did it unless people said not to. Where I currently live, it's not the common practice, so I don't do it unless there is some indication, like shoes by the door. If you're not sure, you can always ask, "Would you like me to take off my shoes?"

1. Observe. If the people come to the door shoeless, and there are shoes at the entrance, take yours off.
2. Ask. If there are no shoes at the door, but the inhabitants are shoeless, ask if you should take yours off.
3. If everybody has shoes on, it would probably be weird if you take yours off.

I always ask when I go to someone's house if I should take my shoes off, no matter if they are wearing shoes or not.
That's the easiest way to go...

Always ask to take your shoes off as some people don't like others to walk around in their house barefoot as they don't know if your shoes are cleaner than your feet.

Some people prefer guests to take off their shoes, others may just be barefoot or in socks by coincidence while they really don't care either way what anyone else does. So when in doubt, just ask 'would you like me to take off my shoes?' It's as simple as that!

Take off the shoes. You won't want dirt which you tag along from God knows where to be blessing the house. Unless the owner insists.

When I see shoes outside the door, I leave mine there before going in. If the householder wears shoes inside, so do I. But, if you don't like to wear them, why don't you just slip out of them before crossing the threshold into the home? If you prefer shoeless indoors, just do it.
