The essential doctrines of fundamentalism are the inerrancy of scripture, the virgin birth, the substitutionary atonement of Christ, Christ's bodily resurrection, and the historicity of the miracles mentioned in the bible, as well as the deity of Jesus. While many fundamentalists today may believe in theocracy, it is not essential to fundamentalism. In fact, early fundamentalists generally were separatists and scorned political involvement by the church, and it wasn't until the late '70's/ early '80's that there was a shift in this stance.

Now some of these coments, is that really the way you talk to people? Is that the way you talk at work or home, on the street. Wouldn't you get violent if someone talked to you that way, even if it where true? If so, I frankly don't understand why not treat people like you would want then to treat you. I mean I'm not really getting personal but one day you will have children and they will think this is a dog eat dog world were as dogs band together for mutual protection. Each of your counties has a civil society and you protect it and each other. Once violence gets going it spreads. People lose respect for each other and feel no qualms about abuse. Don't we have enough domestic violence for instance. Is that what to expect atheism will bring us, no human values? Can we rise above the animals? That's basically what religion is supposed to do. Can't you raise the standards of Chritians to at least make them civil? How low do we want to go? Science tells us we have the emotional maturity of a two or three year old. Could we try to do better than that here? I would think you would take science seriously and try to do something about that. We could all act better and the adult has to set an example. Are you the adult here or not?

Fundie or fundy (plural fundies) is a pejorative slang term used to refer to Fundamentalist Christians. The term is intentionally derogatory, and is used most commonly by those opposed to the Religious Right movement. The term is often associated with religiously motivated conservative moral beliefs, especially those regarding social issues.
In etymological terms, fundie is an example of a mutated contraction resulting from relaxed pronunciation, where the original word (in this case Fundamentalist) is shortened and slightly altered. There is no recorded first use of the term, though its appearance in the American English vocabulary coincided with the rise of Christian politics in the 1970s.
The word can be used derogatorily to refer to anyone with a strong outspoken belief in any religion, any cause or any concept. This use is less common.
The term is used liberally in various publications and in common speech. Atheist publications and websites use the term frequently. While fundamentalists object to the term, it is not considered hate speech by the general public.

To boil it down to a common characteristic, I would say that anyone with a political agenda based on their religious beliefs is a fundamentalist. Jerry Falwell was a fundamentalist, Pat Robertson is a fundamentalist, any minister who implores his congregation to vote a specific way is a fundamentalist. Proselytizing, which includes establishing laws based on dogma, is a fundamental tenet of the Bible.

Short for fundamentalist, however you define that. Usually thought of as extremist in a negative way by most people.
