The town is small compared to Sacramento. . . . Redding's population is about 80,000. Despite what some people think, everyone doesn't know everyone.
Redding is not a farming or ranching town. Some of the smaller towns on the outskirts are (Anderson, Cottonwood, Red Bluff.) Redding has a mall (yes, just one), two movie theaters and lots of places nearby for outdoor activities. If you're into boating in the summer, skiing in the winter or hiking inbetween, you have plenty of choices within an hour or so away.
It's a great place to retire. I would say it's not a place you'd want to stay if you're looking to find a hugely successful career. Good place to raise a family if you're looking for a smaller town though.

It's not the fun capitol of the world. It gets really hot in the summer. It's redneck country, so if your politics are at all liberal or even middle of the road, keep your mouth shut. It is farming and ranching country, so those will be the topics of most of the conversations you'll hear.

Small rural, everybody knows everybody, HOT,HOT,HOT, lots of 100* temps in the summer. Nothing to do, except go jump in the Sacramento river. Boring. Some place to pass through when you are on HWY 5.
