How can I find out that they are actually my family members? I'm looking for a family tree. The last name I'm looking for is Nowlin.

Nowlin is a pretty common name, meaning, in order for you find a tree with your ancestors on it, you'd need alot more info than just the Surname.
Ancestry.com has a few different offers for free trials. If you start with the US free trial, once thats up you can move on to the World trial.
Youve got to have some names and places to begin your search....I looked Nowlin up on Ancestry.com just for the heck of it and found there are quite a few from the Alabam area......the link below is to a list of Nowlins.....try it out...
Good luck to you!!!!

does that make me famous??
The Nowlin family is from Virginia, and both my husband and daughters are related. Directly or otherwise. I count by marriage.
There are tons of family trees on rootsweb.com.. the problem is that you will not be in them, since they won't include live persons. That's a standard in genealogy. So, it is important to stop a moment, research yourself BACK to at least a dead person (ancestor), and location. Nowlin is a fairly well researched family.. but you still have to "make your connection". Yours shouldn't be too hard. Just remember that there are more than one "trees" and you won't necessarily be from the same Nowlin line immediately. I'll be curious to know if you are from the Nowlin - Wade group. You'll have to stay in touch with me.
As for really famous persons, can't answer that without THEIR tree. And they might be related to your mom's grandfather's side, which might be a different family.
ps.. depending on which branch you come from, you can EASILY get back to the late 1700's with Nowlin. That's a short jump in genealogy.

I've also found out how fun it is to hit the Ancestry.com button that links subscribers to the famous and infamous, but unless an individual is a direct descendant of any of these notable people and/ or unless he or she can actually trace these lineages to a time during the last 200 years, it's very hard to verify a lot of these relationships with primary source material--marriage licenses, baptismal records, and probate references. After all, the Daughters of the American Revolution ask that applicants submit actual primary source records unless an applicant can piggyback her membership on the back of a close relative. In the meanwhile, enjoy the accomplishments of the less than famous, but much closer relatives.
