Our dogs are 14 and 15 - both are healthy. They have eaten Science Diet their whole lives; sometimes they are on the RX Science Diet. If a dog has too much protein, it can lead to bigger problems - including kidney stones.
Your dogs should eat some veggies and rice. Our dogs have only gone to vets from the top vet schools in the country and all of them have recommended a balance diet - including fresh veggies and food that contains rice and corn. Yes, dogs are classified as a carnivore, but because of their teeth and digestive tracks and not because of their diets or what they can safely digest. They are not obligate carnivores (animals that only eat meat) and need non-meat foods in their diet to obtain certain proteins, acids, etc. Also, there is a debate as to whether domesticated dogs should be classified as a carnivore at all.

We feed the Costco "Kirkland" brand. It's 28CAD for a 40lb bag (last I heard it was ranging from 20-25USD). No corn, no soy, no wheat and both my dogs are very healthy and happy on it. They prefer the Chicken and Rice type but there's also Lamb and Rice. The most important thing is that you find a food that works for your dog. I'd work from the top of your price range and down in terms of food quality, stopping when you find what works for your dog. If you can't afford some of the really pricey stuff, then it's better to feed something less pricey but still good for your dog than to not feed him enough, but some people will feed the worst food just because it's cheap, and that's just not fair to the dog. Those "premium" foods may or may not be good, but if they're good and within price range, they're just as good for your mutt from the pound as any show dog.

Stay away from Purina, Iams/Eukanuba, Ol Roy, Science Diet, Kibbles N Bits, Pedigree, Beneful, and anything from the Grocery store / Walmart etc.. There are plenty of good quality dog foods out there, that don't contain sugars, questionable ingredients, or cancer causing preservatives.. Check out the Canidae..

Champion Pet Foods brand Orijen has 70% veterinary inspected meat (chicken and there's also a fish product as well) and 30% vegetables, 0% grain.
"The concept is simple: include the fresh, whole foods that nature evolved dogs and cats to eat (in correct ratio and quantity), and exclude ingredients like cereal grains that are not part of the natural diet.
High-protein, low-carbohydrate and grain-free, ORIJEN features fresh regional ingredients in a Biologically Appropriate ratio of 70 percent meat, 30 percent fruit and vegetables and zero grain (70/30/0).
The metabolism of cats and dogs is naturally evolved to operate on a largely carnivorous diet, and by better matching the natural diet, ORIJEN promotes peak health in cats and dogs of all breeds and life stages, nourishing them as Nature originally intended. ORIJEN is a new direction in pet nutrition: BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE. " From the site.
I highly recommend this food. I feed all my pets (2 Goldens and a mixed breed cat) Orijen and am very happy with the results.

I love the Natural Balance brand, and they have several varieties. All our dogs do great on it, and the rescue dogs (who often come in with malnutrition) recover quickly on this food.
