I am considering going traveling around Thailand/Asia next year..

What must-do's are there? How much roughly does it cost to live and travel comfortably for 3-4 months.. any travel tips please?

It really depends on what you want to do.Bangkok is very much a bustly city wheras Chiag mai is a bit more laid back and the there is the coastal places to see which are beautiful Air asia flys to a lot of places now so you can go further afield in your time. Malaysia, Penang is good. There is also the oppertunity to visit vietnam, Laos, Cambodia from Bangkok. Singapore is also very accessible so you need to think how you want to spend your time. I have been going to that area for the past 3 years and still have got lots of places I want to see.
Relax and enjoy, travel, hotels and food are pretty cheap but you will need to do your homework. look at hotels on trip advisor as you can see other travellers comments and they have always been spot on for me.

Thailand is easy and alot of fun - it has become more expensive in recent years as the baht appreciates but there are still tremendous bagains to be had, especially off the beaten path - decent hotels can be had for $15 - food can be very reasonable - as little as $1 for a meal in a market - bus travel is quite inexpensive - - people are friendly and relaxed - - come and enjoy -

Yes, I have visited Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya.
You must NOT touch the heads of young boys...it's a taboo.
You must be in proper decent attire when visiting temples.

The Thais are friendly, warm and very hospitable people. You will find living there very comfortable indeed.
If you are American, it is peanuts with regards to the cost of living and travelling. It depends on the location and accommodation you have chosen. Pattaya has many foreign visitors and expatriates living there.
Be wary of pickpockets and snatch thieves, not just in Thailand but everywhere else in the world !!!

im last and can only reccomend thailand as it such a bloody great country , you will have so much fun, ive been to bangkok (didnt actually like it, mainly cos i dont like mega cities , like london etc) i suggest phuket and the island trips soma amzing islands out there.

also go to pattaya and to the wishing well, see richard and ask if he is doing a boat trip, costs about £7 and for that you get a taxi to the boat, boat trip out to a great island, enough beer and wine spritzers to drown the navy and its on a lovely island and last most of the normal day and then taxi back to the wishing well, been twice out there and its so amazing i decided to emigrate (which cant come soon enough)

also suggest shooting, bit more expensive but if your a normal bloke like me who has never shot a gun its worth it once.

dont forget your camera as you will see some sights that will melt your heart and some things that will make you laugh so hard.

long live thialand.

p.s may take you 3 or 4 days to relax , we westerners are so damn uptight , basically they know how to have fun out there.

god im jealous of you at the moment

I've been to:
India (Bombay)
Thialand (Koshichang)
Koria (Incheon)
China (Qingdow + Changshu)

India great - You can buy quality comdoms for about 10p for a three pack so stock up! Worth considering not eating unless at hotel. (80 rupies to the pound change in allmost any shop)

Thialand - This is where the comdoms come in handy! Great beachs, night club ect. (Use dollars othen gets you the better deal)

Korea - Suprisingly expensive, not much to do hardly any one speaks English. On the upside very good looking girl and everywhere is very safe. (97 yu-yuan to the pund exchange shops everywhere)

China - buy copied DVD's they may as well be real, the look real and the picture and sound may as well be real. You would pay about 50p each. (15 yuan to the pound change befor you go or they will rip you off!!)

Hope it helped

Dave

well i spent £10k + in 5 months but i am a very very bad boy. If u do any long train journeys remember to take your own food the train staff have a scam of bringing very poor food for high prices, with no receipt.
Also don't forget how cheap internal flights are phuket to bangkok 1900bt about $60 and thats a long way.
oh and don't forget ur morals as a YA member you'll not be allowed anywhere near a thai woman. And remember it doesn't matter how you dress it up if you give that poor girl any money in the morning ,you will never ever ever ever ever be able to take the moral high ground again. once you step over that line there's no going back.
So that said ur going to need ur lap top with a full hard drive of porn (3months) is a long time if ur gonna be chasing weird looking dreadlocked hippie mingers round, after you've looked at some temples of course.Oh and remember all those t-shirts? there made of polyester or something resembling plastic have u ever worn a plastic bag in 40 degrees and 85% rh make sure u take clothes that soak up sweat thai's don't sweat so don't think u can buy most of ur stuff out there, the materials to thick and unabsorbant.
Get that visa before u leave for thailand, visa runs can be adventures but getting up at 05.00 to meet a crammed minibus with plastic seats and crap aircon for a 10 hr round trip is no fun i can tell you and that reminds me we come off the road at 50mph and rolled down a bank for 75m destroying the minibus and nearly killing all of us because the driver tried to overtake a truck on a blind bend and then an earth lorry appeared. my advice is don't go anywhere by minibus but even the big coaches go off the road.Thats thai men ,there crazy.oh yeah and don't mess around with the western breakfasts there a waste of time get on the thai food for breakfast straight a way it'll save u loads of time looking for food, they don't have set meals for times of the day like us,its difficult it took me nearly 3months to get off the stodge for breakfast and get on the real natural food ,and realise how rubbish our western diet is oh man the food is out of this world .Now i know that u won't be taking part in the night time stuff but just so you can tell everyone how terrible it is to have ur wallet and jewellry stolen sorry i mean the darkside of things u will have to go to pattaya it has to be seen to be beleived it's massive ,if u hire a motorbike do not give ur passport give a copy and do not leave ur bike out side your hotel the hirer will come back in the night and steal it back(he's got the spare keys to the bike and the lock )it's common practise and if u ain't got £750-£1000 for a new scooter you ain't going anywhere coz he's know's your passport no. infact take ur own good quality u-lock you'll sleep sounder. Right now you will no doubt want to go scuba diving while in phuket ,some of the best diving in the world visibility is 20m +
but one thing people don't realise is the home work reading to be done in your hotel room the night before the first day,it's intense better idea is to do the theory online through PADI before you go, although i'd still buy the book as u will need it for reference then when u get there theory is done and no headaches,it's a lot of work my course cost 13,500bt about £200 but if u arrive with books and theory done then it may differ that wasn't an option for me ,i can recommend scandinavian divers off bangla road do not go with anyone else there great but as with all the dive shops they pick u up at 7 in the morning at the shop and then spend the next hour driving u round picking people up from local hotels, my advice ride urself dock its only 25 mins or get a moto taxi, one morning i got drove round in the back off a truck for an hour then we ended up going back to the shop to pick someone up well annoying when uve been up since 06:30 and got in from the bars at 4am . Get a scuba mask before u go i think all the stuff is well expensive i saw a mask identical to mine(mares) in decathalon sports uk for half of what i paid for mine and you know what? it was ******* made in thailand.
Good luck if u go to phuket contact me i'll give u the name of a great british run guest house on the beach road, soi bprai- sa-nee. post office road.I haven't the number to hand right now.
