The MB 300 SE for sure-way better engineered car-the LS is a glorified Toyota

This is a subjective opinion. I think more auto experts will vote for the 1990 LS400 as the clean sheet engineering and quality of build pretty much leap frogged the Mercedes 300, and pretty much made the Germans adjust to a new competitor. Also a high quality V8 versus a 6 cylinder, and it was originally more than $10K cheaper. It was a fairly bold move taking on the Germans , and Lexus has typically beat the Benz in industry JD Powers ratings year over year. Also, they put a LS400 in a commercial running on a dyno with champagne glasses stacked on the hood up to 150 mph! I never saw any competitors come up with a counter to this...because maybe they couldn't!

Both are at the end of normal service lifetime. 18 year old cars? Why would you want to compare? When a car get that old you need to see what the service history is. Both cars will be frightfully expensive to repair should there be work to be done. Japan Car Parts become obsolete after 12 years. German cars you can get parts for popular cars a little longer because there owners replace lots of parts as they wear out. Japan car owners tend to neglect broken switches and power window motors and locks when there cars get old. The Mercedes Benz you want you cannot close the glove box because the receipts fill it up. MB could cost 1,000's a year to operate.Just look at the last years receipts.

Mercedes is a glorified Chrysler. I'd take a Toyota over a Chrysler.

I like the LS 400 the best. It looks really good, even today and it's 18 YEARS OLD! It holds up really nicely so that's the one I would go with.
