the usual formats for windows is AVI (audio video interleave) for high resolution, and MOV (mpeg1) for 240x320 resolution. the resolution of a camcorder is not as flexible as a still camera. miniDV is 480 x 720 pixel, which is a tape format, not a camera setting. DVD and HDD camcorders may allow a more compressed file of the video at the camera but that is not an improvement of viewing quality.
