Hong Kong - reasons being it've always been higher salary there, standard of living is also better for the buck. If you're a good english teacher you get good paid, higher than Taiwan, and definitely higher than China (under normal circumstances).
There's a canadian english teacher in China who's making couple millions of dollars for designing and endorsing a full set of english learning program nationwide backed by the central gov't, this is the prime example of "financial reward".
Korea - reason being it's a national policy backed by the gov't now where the whole Korea population's going frenzy to learn english, like a cultural phenomenanon.
Japan - too expensive simply to live there, unless you teach in reknowned universities.

It depends on the circumstances. A university job in Japan can pay very well, but those are hard to come by. If you are living in Tokyo on 250000 yen a month, it's not a lot of money. Again, if you have a nice gig in the ROK you could do well. If you go to ROK and get stiffed on your pay like sometimes happens-then you don't come out ahead. If you go to Taiwan and work hard you can do well, but you will have to earn your pay. I wouldn't expect to make a lot of money in China, but there are lots of opportunities there. At least in China you will be able to afford to live well by the local standards.

Japan and Taiwan is still 'okay' but I suggest Singapore as a better alternative. Singapore itself was a former British Colony and its standard of English is higher as English is considered as a first language back there.
Hope this helps, good luck!

I taught english in China and was paid 3000 yuan a month and was given an apartment for free. If I had had teaching qualifications they would've paid me 4000 yuan. This was back in 2002. $US 1 = 8 yuan (approx)
