In the LDS church they see the journey of life as a way to learn emotion because we were once in Heaven and we knew nothing but happiness and peace, so we didn't know we were happy or it was peaceful, or for that matter that it was perfect. So God sent us here...so when we return to Heaven we will be abe to compare Heaven to Earth and know how great it is...

As far as a savior and saving ourselves, the only way we can save ourselves is by accepting Jesus...

The way to save yourself is to give up your life. Your life as is created for you by your ego. You have to die. You'll know you're dead because you will hurt then you will love. Love replaces ego. Love and do anything you want. Because if you love you do nothing wrong. The spirit of Christ saves us. The spirit of Christ is inside you. You have to find God within you. That's they journey that's the mystery. I can't do it for you, I would if I could. I can tell you the way but if you don't understand you can't get there. No magic oath will make this happen. If you aren't ready I can't begrudge it because even if you find it it's your victory alone. I'd celebrate the Father with you though. God Bless You.

EDIT: Life isn't a test, life is life. God loves you and isn't judgmental. Your judgment is what condemns you. That's why Jesus said Judge not least you be judged. If you don't want to be judged don't judge. If you want to be forgiven then forgive. The lords prayer says forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. God isn't hateful our carnal nature is and it condemns us for it is original sin. We are born dead. I hope someone understands. If not I did try and I'll continue to try even though I know God calls when he wants. :)

Why would we need a savior if the biblical monster did not create hell?

Supposedly god knows the outcome before we are even born, so what about this free will I keep hearing about.

We cannot save ourselves, that is the point. There is nothing you can do in your flesh to appease God or remove the punishment due you for your sins. Only Christ can remove your sins through His death, and only through His resurrection can we be justified.
Life, for the believer, is the process of sanctification. We are in the process of being conformed more and more into the image of Christ. At our death, we are then perfected, having shed our sinful flesh and our sin nature.

Put it this way. If you're walking along the road at night and someone attacks you, will you wait for a savior or fight off the attacker yourself? If you wait for a savior, you might end up in the morgue. If you fight him off, you might survive!

The whole point of needing a Saviour is that we cannot save ourselves.
Man's inhumanity to man is clear evidence of that.
