We took it from Cuba (Spain, actually) during the Spanish-American War.

Cuba used to be a colony of Spain some hundred years ago. When Spain lost the Spanish-American War, it had to give up some of its colonies to the US. This also included the Philippines, as I can remember from history. The Guantanamo Bay lease agreement is controversial in that it is open-ended and didn't include any expiration date on the lease. It is unlikely that Guantanamo Bay will be returned to Cuba in the next 100 or 200 years.

The United States received a very long term lease for Guantanamo as a result of the Spanish American War in 1898. This war involved Cuba.

It was taken during the Spanish-American War. When Cuba was granted its independence many years later, Guantanamo remained as a coaling station to refueld Naval ships. We continue to lease it from the Cuban government and a check is presented each month to that goverment, via the ambassador from a third country in that nation. Castro has never cashed one check.

Guantanamo Bay has been a US based because of the fact that 1898. It formally become sanctioned by ability of a treaty in 1903 after the Spanish American warfare. the present government perspectives it as an unlawful based because of the fact they say that the unique treaty become signed decrease than duress (they're in all probability good, yet that would not easily rely in diplomacy.) it remains there because of the fact the U. S. desires to have a base there and Cuba would not desire to electrify a shooting warfare with a lots extra advantageous potential. So it is going to stay till the U. S. is forced to furnish it up by ability of a lots wider area of the international. maximum in all probability they'll sometime after Castro dies.
