Instead of avoiding a person who has gone to great lengths to desroy me socially with vicious gossip, lies and other condescending remarks, how should I react to them if we were to unexpectedly come face to face? I don't want to play their game or become physical. What should I do?

Regardless of how this person treats you, you should always be nothing but civil, gracious, and kind. Frankly, I feel sorry for a person who finds it necessary to spend so much energy on trying to hurt you in this way. It'll only be successful if you allow it to bother you. It sounds like perhaps what this person needs is compassion.

I'll give you the specifics:

You don't have to be a good sport about a backstabber or someone who screwed you over, but this advice will help you well in life.

Act like you don't give a damn and you don't need them.

You can say hi, but keep your conversation short. NEVER reveal what you will do to them, or your plans.

Show no emotion, even if they try to push your buttons.
(Never let them see you bleed, and always have an escape plan)

If the person wants to start trouble with you, you get sarcastic and wise-cracking. Once they put their hands on you, all bets are off and you kick that person's @ss.

Let them show their emotions to you, so that way you have a reason to put them in their place.

Good Luck.

Tell them you know. Bullies like to do stuff in the dark where no one can see. If they are rude to you in public tell them WHEN THEY DO IT It has to be pointed out at the time in front of the same people. Say something like. ( I wonder why you are always so condescending to me in public. I think you may see me as a threat.) Don't do this as a question to the person but as a statement. And then Cooley walk on to another group.

Also never try to justify your self to this person and always let them come to you. Don't stroke this persons ego to try to make them like you. I expect there are plenty of people who will like you for the person you are.

Read what I have said and if you feel it's rubbish discard it. But I sincerely hope this advice helps.

What the others answered are right. Just be civil with him/her. Greet him/her politely when you see him/her; treat him/her as you treat your friends. 'Coz you know, it's also a way to get back at that person (well, not that you mean any harm or the like). If you treat him/her nicely, maybe he/she will regret and stop what he/she has been doing (only if he/she has conscience), and start being nice to you as well. I guess it will make him/her feel guilty with the wrong things he/she has been doing to you. Just don't mind the bad stuff he/she has been spreading about you if you know that they're false. ^_^ I know that's tough but in the end, he/she will be the one who'll be suffering. I guess he/she is trying to ruin your reputation 'coz he/she is just jealous. You don't need to mind people who are like that; don't stoop down to their level. (*If you think that I sound like contradicting myself, I'm not. ^_^ By not minding him/her, I mean you don't have to retaliate in a violent way. ^_^' Just sit back, relax, and wait for him/her to receive her "karma." Haha. All the bad stuff he/she has been doing will surely come back to him/her.)

"Hello. Lovely to see you looking so well." This should be said smilingly with regal iciness. Nothing takes the wind from malicious sails like strict, cold politeness.

I pretend not knowing what he is doing and will greet him in the same way as I used to. I wish him the best of everfything.

Just ignore them. They won't end up destroying you, they'll end up destroying themselves. A lot of people can see through that bullsh*t anyway.
Just don't go out of your way to talk to them or anything, it's not your duty.

Give them your best smile and see what they say, and take it from there.
And keep in mind that the best insults almost sound like compliments.
