.....in Upstate New York, then why won't the LDS church that owns the property just excavate and disply them for all to see? Is it because they are not there and have never been? Is it because their faith is based on a book of lies.

Dances With Poultry: I think because of all the revisions to their "holy" book the LDS should consider changing the name of their church to, The Church of What's Happening Now, Maybe Not Tomorrow Though?

Pinkadot: I gave you a thumbs up for your blind faith (allegiance) to your religion. My Mother's family is LDS and the majority of them are still paracticing Mormons. I love them no matter what they believe and I love you too. Sorry if this question and it's subsequent answers hurt any feelings. By the way I am THE ALL AMERICAN!!!! As such I respect everybodies right to worship as they see fit. Thanks for all the answers.

They were 'conveniently' taken back by ans Angel. Happens all the time.
Smith conveniently argued he wouldn't 're-translate' the missing 116 pages lest someone 'use it against' him. I still don't get it. Either he could or couldn't.
Smith Conveniently had revelations about nearly everything, including getting into the ladies petticoats.
Perhaps it is the One True Church of Convenient Excuses

No, we do not have them. No one really knows where they are now, or at least they aren't making it public knowledge.
Just a quick note about the scholar thing...it was prophesied in the bible that there would be a new book of scripture come forth and that it would be taken to a "scholar" and he would say "I cannot open a sealed book." Well, that actually happened. Joseph took the book to someone to look at and translate and the man replied he could not read a sealed book. I of course am summarizing that, not word for word...
Anywho, there were also witnesses...who held and saw the plates, not just Joseph. Lots of them were trusted family members and close aquaintances...who else could Joseph had trusted with the sacred plates?
I have faith and know the Book of Mormon was translated from the plates. I know through each word I read that they are the inspired words of God and that the plates were saved for our day.

That would certainly settle a lot of arguments.
No one but Joseph Smith ever saw the plates. There were witnesses to the plates that testified they saw them with their "spiritual" eyes. Some witnesses were allowed to lift(heft) the plates while covered with a cloth but none were allowed to look at the plates inside.
But even if the plates did really exist it doesn't prove that (a) They are from God or (b) that what they say is true. Nothing that Joseph Smith claimed they said has been verified by archaeology, no detailed prophecies were made that subsequently came true and some things that Joseph Smith and other church leaders said have subsequently been proven to be untrue - so you can draw your own conclusions as to how reliable the testimony of these people is!

I thought it was rather convenient for Moroni to take away the brass plates before some scholar had a chance to look at them...
*edit* Brian: OK, golden plates. Does the metal really matter, or are you just trying to distract the argument away from the idea that Joseph Smith might be pulling a fast one?

They're not buried there, Moroni took them. We don't know where they are.
I personally think the prophet and apostles still have them, but they just say they're gone so people wont keep bugging them to see them.
----------
Crypto...first they are gold not brass...and second if the scholar had looked at them and found that they were authentic...don't you think they would convert? Maybe you should learn more about the translation of the plates...

Why would God say this in the Bible and then go and negate it all by dealing with Joseph Smith and giving out golden plates.,
Surely Jesus said it all and the apostle John recorded our future for us in Revelation.
(Romans 8:31-33) What, then, shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who will be against us? 32Â He who did not even spare his own Son but delivered him up for us all, why will he not also with him kindly give us all other things? 33Â Who will file accusation against God’s chosen ones? God is the One who declares [them] righteous.

it is common knowledge that the gold plates from the mormons are kept safely along with the ten commandments from moses. if you discover the location you will not find one without the other.... this means of course if one does not exist neither does the other
