Look, forget all the crap about the Jews rejecting Jesus and therefore that was the reason; or that there is no G-d; or that the Jews were somehow complicit; etc. I'm really, really tired of hearing all of those reasons.
Unfortunately your question has no answer. We can't fathom the mind of the Divine any more than an ant can understand what people do. I'm not trying to be some crazy religionist here; I'm a Reform Jew and a scientist by profession. If we could understand the mind of G-d then we'd have the answers to everything, right? You've asked a good question--but unfortunately we just don't have an answer and we never will. So to even try to ascribe a reason to it is the height of hypocrisy.
P.S. This rant was nothing personal--you asked a question we all ask--I'm responding to some of the answers above me.

I grieve with the Jews about all victims of Holocaust and just as about all victims of fascism in all other nations. This must not happen again. There must be the world power to stop aggressive countries. I am not a judge and I want not to be on the side of of doing evil. Now terrorism is the greatest evil. There will be no exoneration for killing innocent people for achieving any political purposes.

First of all, I'ts WWII, not WWI
Secondly, how do you know He didn't help them? Just because outward history says many people died, and they did, you don't know of the miracles that were occurring within that broad framework. In fact, there are many witnesses of God saving people and rescuing people from situations and from death. Just read Corey Tenboom's autobiography of how Christ was able to use her to change the hearts of SS guards. Things are a lot more nuanced in life than the way you are making them out to be.

Your question should be "where was mankind?" How could the worst atrocities in history occur in the Christian culture? Why hasn't man learned to treat each other with respect and to come to the aid of those in need?
Is turning the other cheek enough?
Is "love your neighbor...." enough?
Is forgiving one another enough?
I think not!
I repeat! WHERE WAS MANKIND????
There's another genocide occurring right now, today, in Darfur, Sudan. Why are we indifferent to their suffering? Are we destined to repeat history for eternity?

Because God isn't in the business of helping people. But if you piss him off, like build some gold cow or something then God will smite the ***** out of you.
Floods, plauges, suffering ... the Judeo-Christian God is an assh0le

God would have helped them if they asked. You need to remember that this is the group that reject Jesus as a Savior.
God was not with Hitler. Hitler used his intellect wrong way and the same goes with the free will. Hitler was not hero. : )

I will tell you a couple of historical facts that you can do whatever you like with. The Nazis put the Rabbis in charge of deciding who got rounded up and put on the train. It was Jewish police that the Nazis gave the rabbis control over that rounded them up and put them on the trains. It was not the Nazi police or German army, in spite of what you see in the movies.
Yes, they might have believed they were just being deported, but the point is that they participated in their own destruction under a totalitarian government that they supported.
