I've had my new cat for a couple months now and I think she has lost her trust in me after having her spayed. She was just warming up to me, sitting in my lap for short moments and following me around the house before I took her to the vet to be spayed. Now after having to spend a night at the vets, and having me force her mouth open to put a pill in twice a day for two weeks she is not the same cat.

Is there a chance that she will revert back to being the same kind of cat she was with the her first owner. I have always been very gentle with her even when giving her the pills. I am trying to take it slow and not forcing anything and giving her a lot of space and playing with her several times a day. Any other suggestions?

Can cats change that easy? People tell me just give it time, but I'm wondering what the average time it is for a year old cat to get over all these new changes in her life?

I think it's possible to regain her trust, but it will take time. It sounds like you accomplished this once before, so just be patient and hopefully your cat will return to you.

I think you are a great Mommy Bean and contrary to another suggestion I don't think you need a new hobby. A cat is a little person with 4 legs. My cat came to me at 1 year after having lived on her own in the woods for several months. She was almost dead and didn't trust anyone. She came around fast as she couldn't walk or run away. Gentle, soft movements and treats. Get some good protein treats like Bonito Flakes etc rather than the dry Kitty Crack and use things like pieces of shrimp, small bites of boiled chicken, maybe pieces of fish ( avoid garlic and onions) also they often like plain yogurt. If your cat isn't lactose in tolerant a spoon of vanila ice cream (no diet sweetners or chocolate)
Make many small treat times with a cuddle in the spot you usually sit.
Don't force her on your lap if it works best just sit on the floor and give her a treat and a love and pet etc and soon when she hears the treat bottle shake or a noise you make to have her associate it with treats she will come or even take you to the spot where treats and cuddles come.
In the future if pilling there are pill pockets to try. For small pills you can use 1/2 of one and pinch it closed. None available in Sweden but people tell me they work and are expensive. Also could try when pilling do not tip her head back after you pop the pill in. She can't swallow with her nose pointed to the ceiling. Give a treat before the pilling and then lots of cuddles and nice words and another treat.
Tell your girl just why you will do it and how she will feel better.
She will come around and you will have a sweet girl back with you. (((Hugs))) to you and scritches to the new little fur baby. Bonnie

If the ONLY time you pick her up is to do the pills, then she'll be leery of you for a long time. Make a lot of effort to talk to her, carry her around, pick her up (even if you have to pull her out from under the bed), brush her, and to physical contact. This will help a lot.

No cat likes the pilling, but they all adjust if the rest of the routine stays the same or if they get more hands on time.

If she doesn't trust you, I am wondering if it was the way you gave the cat her meds.
I often have to give cats their meds when they are sick at the shelter and no matter what their disposition, they don't hold it against me. The secret is to do it quickly with no messing around and giving them a stroke and scratch afterwards.

If you are giving her too much space, maybe she thinks you dont want her to be around you.

I have multi aged cats introduced into my household, and most have had to have meds on arrival as they were sick. All have not taken offense and are affectionate and like being around me

it took my cat 8 years to finally come up and sit with me and let me pet him again after having him neutered and declawed!!! He was one unhappy camper!!!(don't blame him) but he used to purr so nice and loud, but he's still not as loud as he used to be!! good luck and i hope it doesn't take that long for you!!
a little hint on giving pills--try wrapping the pill in a half of a caramel, cheese, hot dog, something like that. they will usually take it no problem

Hun, I think you need to get a better hobby. It seems a little sad that your main concern is your cat.
