America seems to be falling behind more and more compared to other countries. We are behind in literacy and education. The dollar is behind many other world currencies. And it just seems like America is kind of in a sad state. What is your take on this? Is it because of our lax education and half asses views on science(intelligent design)? What can be done to help out America?

Good to see some Americans who think like you,
You guys are giving away your democracy,
I’d say US is falling behind because your leaders don’t listen,
They didn’t listen about Iraq war and they don’t listen now,
The whole world hates US,
Don’t believe it? Take a trip to Canada or Europe (let alone Middle East)
You guys need to choose some wise guy for the white house,
Good luck!

My biology teacher was an openly atheist.... I didn't learn anything significant in school. I didn't even know where the name America came from. Intelligent Design or Evolution or prayer in schools is not the issue concerning education. The issue is poor standards, ineffective teachers, and so much more. The schools are more a place of child day care then facilities of education.

Different classes should be introduced. Economics. Mechanics. Better history classes.

Frankly, reading Huck Finn and being told that humans came from chimps does not really progress the mind. More relevant classes should be introduced.

I will try to avoid religion on this answer. USA did get religion though and religion put Ronnie Raygun into power. Raygun cut the education budget almost in half.

USA decided to destroy the "Evil Empire" of Soviet Russia.
USA likely damaged themselves more than Russia.

Out of this came all of the talk of USA as the world's policeman and USA the world's only Superpower.

Ahem, every nation, every empire, that decided it was the worlds only superpower has gone down in terrible defeat and caused massive damage. History is full of examples. Athens and the Peloponnesian War, Carthage against Rome, Rome against the Goths, and all the way up to Germany's Thousand Year Reich.
I think that USA is in more trouble than they understand and that we are on the brink of WW III.

Like who needs to be smart when you have the most guns, eh.

I'm thinking American needs overall strict guidelines on just about anything you can teach.

I'm from two completely different countries and from what I can see, America's way too loose compared to Japan. Slow progress, half assed on just about everything that goes on, let's things go too easy thinking it wouldn't make much of a difference when that little difference builds up and ruins a whole country.

half asses sound so much better.
I just read a near-death experience yesterday that was rather profound, and it turns out, is also something in the Baha'i writings about America. America has the ability to lead the world into something wonderful and noble, but unfortunately, she has been kind of derailed, and instead, will suffer economic depression.

after reading this thing, my husband walked into the room and said: "Hey, did you know the American stock market nearly crashed today?"

And I was like: "wow, noshit!"

On one hand, I am extremely loyal to my country. I believe in the self-evidence of the principles of the Founders and our Constitution, and I love the people here, with their candid joviality and desire for truth.

On the other hand, I believe a dark spirit of consumerism and greed birthed our country, at least a large portion of it, especially during the days of slavery and the gold rush. The Puritans and other religious movements were exceptions, but at the same time they still harbored a strong Calvinist work ethic which lent itself naturally to the rise of Capitalism. Profit for the sake of profit = love of money. Love of money = the root of all evil.

So I think America has its blessings as well as its curses, probably like every other country or territory on the planet.

well, george bush has been pushing the iraq conflict for way too long, and he's been ignoring most everything else for his entire presidency. so everything is just going down hill mainly because he's focusing too much on that and not enough on everything else. and he's not gonna change now, he's too stubborn. that's all i could see the reason to be.

It's all about diversity. See, we don't like diversity of nationality, sexuality, or language in America. We much prefer diversity of literacy, healthcare, and income.

well, don't worry. Australia attempts to emulate America in every way (due to a certain higher powered someone), so we're not doing that well either.... =(
