Depends on where you live. If you live where I do (in one of the states bordering Mexico) then it has been an issue for years that has been ignored by the other 45 states. 9/11 pointed out the gaping holes in our border security and so now the other 45 states have recognized a threat that can affect them as well. Unless you are Hawaii. It isn't just Mexicans. It's everyone that comes here and overstays their visa. Europeans, Asians, Africans, Canadians and Mexicans. They all come here and stay here without doing it the proper way. The government gave amnesty back in the 80's which only fueled the fire of people coming here the wrong way. They figured if the other people got it (amnesty) they should come here and wait for it to happen again. Seems as if everyone is all for it and so we pick up the 32 million unwanted Mexicans and how ever many more from the other places around the world. Start collecting taxes and put the Democrats (communists) in power because all the people who received amnesty will vote for them. If they have a clean background check and want to work hard for citizenship then I'm all for it. But we don't want their criminals, their pedophiles, and their 15 kids to a family.

No, illegal immigrants shouldn't be given amnesty. They should be sent back and work their way in here like all other legal immigrants. I am the son of legal immigrants from El Salvador. It's a slap in the face to them when they worked so hard to get here and provide for me and my siblings while those who didn't got a free pass.

Believe me, I know a lot of them come here for a better life or to support their families back home. I've seen what goes on in other countries. But it doesn't give them a right to break another country's law.

Some come here and commit crimes and when caught, overcrowd our prisons. Many of those crimes include murder and I.D. Theft.

If you're wondering whether or not illegal immigrants should be given amnesty, consider the story of 32 year-old Audra Schmierer, a woman who unknowingly owed $32,000+ to the IRS in 2002. According to the news story "An illegal immigrant in Fort Worth, Texas, had managed -- through means that remain unknown -- to hijack her Social Security number and use it to obtain employment as a steelworker. The number was circulated among other illegal immigrants, who used it to land various jobs."

Or consider the story of Erika Tedder, whose (at the time) 9 year-old daughter's Social Security number was being used since 2002 up until the time of the culprit's arrest in 2006. Now the mother has to clean up the mess that this illegal immigrant made.

Or look at the recent schoolyard shootings in New Jersey where an "undocumented" immigranted was allegedly involved in this horrible murder.

Do you still think we should give amnesty to illegal immigrants? I sure don't think so.

What do you mean not all illegals commit crimes? By definition illegal s have committed a crime by being here illegally. And strongly no on amnesty. I am all for legal immigration, those are the people we want to come here. Because they respect the law.

Strongly no.

Amnesty is blanket coverage to forgive people who are breaking the law every single day they are here. Should some be given an opportunity to gain citizenship? Perhaps, but we should not forgive their past crimes and those crimes must be tabulated on a case by case basis.

Some illegals are guilty of identity theft and have done real harm to innocent people. Some illegals are guilty of tax evasion by working under the table Some are guilty of welfare fraud by collecting money for anchor babies and working at the same time.

Sure writing letters might make a difference but honestly the American people have already spoken on the matter and are unwilling to consider an amnesty at this time. 67% of Americans are opposed to amnesty and are demanding that the government enforce the laws we have now.

My answer is no. It would be unfair to those who are following the legal process. This would just invite more illegal aliens/immigrants because they would see that America has gotten soft. Instead U.S. should assist the people who are under petition or who's process has been long delayed by some reason. As far as I'm concerned they've sat it out for years waiting to get their greencards (legally) and still no solution to speed things up. As for congress, methinks they are the only ones who can resolve things themselves. Unless of course majority of the people (masses) would vote either against it or for it. In short, a few thousands won't cut it.

What country is this? America or Mexico? It isn't a pretty sight having us bend over backwards just to accommodate illegal immigrants. And they are not "undocumented citizens." Last time I checked, it was something you had to work for and not as a term used for people that are breaking the laws of this country. Plus they are sucking up the resources of small towns such as Hazleton, PA. They were at the limits of their budget, and the with the influx of illegal immigrants, crime rates have gone up. The population has shot up over the past 6 years, yet they have received not much more tax income for their town's budget. Recently, Hazleton passed anti-immigration laws that punished those who employ illegals and laws make it illegal to rent to an illegal immigrant. When the ACLU heard about this, they were outraged just like they are about child molesters getting justice. So they filed a lawsuit against the city of Hazleton. It was struck down as "unconstitutional."

Strongly no on the question about the giving illegal aliens amnesty. Why should people who have no respect for the law be given a break? What about enforcement? Where will it stop?

Can writing letters to congress help? No. What will help would be shutting down their phone system again like we did in June. Letters are thrown away or just deleted after read by one of their aids. Congress does what buisiness wants them to do.

The people have spoken, NO AMNESTY!

NO NO NO By doing this you are giving a slap in the face to every legal immigrant who has followed the US law and guidelines to get a job, set up a home here in the States. They have spent thousands of dollars on lawyers and applications fees, on medical (required for green card - do you know if you fail your medical you don't get a green card?)

So NO illegals should not have the quick ticket to the green card or US citizenship. Reward them for breaking the law by giving them a green card? If it was that easy I would have done it!

While the backlog for legal immigrants waiting for a green card is a number of years.

Strongly yes. Fines for immigration related offenses. (you call that amnesty)

Strongly no. Letters to congress make little difference, except in the aggregate. Staffers count them, but the congressman votes as he likes.

Undocumented immigrants should be given parole and EADs to get them into the system, then they should apply for residence (or migrant worker status) just like someone not present in the US. Their application should be accepted or rejected on its merits.

Those who have committed crimes (other than immigration related offenses) should be refused residence and issued orders to show cause as to why they should not be removed.

This was the gist of the Reid compromise bill which was supported by moderates of both parties. It was poorly written and pleased no one, but it would have been better than nothing.

What we really need is a well-considered overhaul of the entire Immigration and Nationality Act that will bring desireable immigrants in and keep the undesireables out. Since our current law does neither, aliens, employers, and government officials can't really be blamed for ignoring it.
