The MPs have several different duties. First off, they are law enforcement at Army installations and areas where the U.S. forces are occupying. That means they do the vehicle inspections for bombs in Iraq. They also guard the prisoners in Iraq or other war zones.
What applebeer said about them starting as infantry and then going through special training is true. However, it is just a school like the ones Army mechanics, cooks, or any other specialist goes to.
The idea of them being able to take out two Marines by themselves is utter bull. MPs are not superheroes; just policemen in the Military. They are trained in gathering evidence, maintaining civil order, and like. Yes, they are trained to fight (and hopefully subdue) criminals; but in a fight, I would still pick Marine or an Army Ranger in top condition over an MP. The main reason for my choice is that MPs are trained to react, not attack like the other two are.

MP are not Infantry nor are they trained as extensively as the infantry in the areas of patroling, reconing, force on force, ambush, react to ambush, assulting, house clearing, helo ops, amphibious landings, ops behind enemy lines or any number of other areas. MP's often like to think that they train the same or do the same stuff as infantry but they don't.
I was infantry and I often gaurded detainees but that doesn't mean I am doing the same thing as MP or was trained the same way.
That being said..there are two seperate groups of MP's at least
1.MP's
2. Combat MP's
MP's generally are responsible for base security, prisoner detaintion, safety and what not.
Combat MP's are more for war zone dutys in which contact with the enemy is much more likely.
I think everyone is pretty much an MP and wether or not you are a combat MP depends on what unit you get assigned with.
I could be wrong but that was my understanding

i theory approximately being MP in the time of my enlistment technique in the previous wiseing: i'm like 5'a million and a hundred and twenty pounds... Im no longer gonna be arresting many infantrymen, hehe... I additionally theory approximately infantry, yet my recruiter defined that it would be stupid for me lower back... A a hundred and twenty pound guy donning a rucksack and equipment weighing almost one hundred lbs... yet universal, the two may well be relatively cool jobs (i think of). Infantry is defiantly the extra regular and thrilling job, in spite of if it is likewise the adult males that have maximum the crap artwork. that is a annoying artwork job, alot of PT from what i pay attention. Infantry is probly going to be placed interior the extra risky aspects... Infantry are the adult males in firefights ninety 5% of the time, and you'd be those going into enemy cities... MP may well be cool interior the experience that if for some reason you do no longer desire to stay in for existence, you've artwork experiance for the outdoors international.

Okay, that first answer is bogus. MP's are not trained on every MOS and how to "take out two Marines." They are trained on UCMJ, the geneva convention, and conduct combat training. If they are apart of a K-9 unit, they will be deployed often, doing vehicle inspections and watching over detainees. THEY DO NOT HAVE THE SAME JOB FUNCTION AS INFANTRY. They are very sepperate MOS.

Security Forces in the AF are not infantry. You focus on base security and/or protect flying assets. They are training in similiar skills like convoy ops and in several weapons but you won't see a squad of them fighting on an open battlefield. As far as the AF you have jobs like combat weather or combat controller that puts you within ground troops. Para-rescue is also seen as the elite but they more on going into the blaze to save lives.

No it's not like infantry. They run security for stuff sometimes, but house clearing, raids, helo ops that's grunt stuff. MP's think they know it but they don't

MP's start out like everyone else, they go threw basic training etc... they apply to become MP, and they then go threw extensive training, which takes a little while, they will know how each part of the armd forces are trained, they will be able to train other people, and after the training they should be able to take out 2 marines by themselves. MP's should not be messed with for any reason...
