Preferably not the seaside as its too cold wet and miserable for that at the moment. Cant go far as my husband is ill.

York is lovely to visit, it has lovely windy streets with independant shops and it is full of historic sights and beautiful gardens/parks too.

The New Forest its Pretty and has quaint old shops in Quaint old villages,and is only about 70 miles from you.

Bath.Has lovely old buildings and is great to just wander round and find lovely shops down tiny streets,just straight down M4(j18-2hrs).Been away for 2 years and stil love the place.

Rye, York, Chester, Cotwolds, Oxford all have varying degrees of charm

try the south west if its not too far, there are lots of little villages, in devon ,cornwall,sussex with the quaint little shops you require, hope this helps, oh yeah and good b&b,s too

Lincoln - nice shops. Rochester in Kent is nice. Both have a touch of old world charm.

Alnwick in Northumberland, the castle there has just been voted the best tourist attraction in the country.

Lynmouth in Devon is stunning.
