Yes they can die by getting bit by fire ants. This happened to my chihuahua. The vet had to give him shots and then medication to take home. Fire ants when the bite actually inject poision enough bites and it can even kill a person. Take your dog to the vet immediately

Well, yes. Humans have died from serious ant attacks, so naturally any animal with out a high tolerance to ant bites and the proteins which can enter the blood stream therefrom can have a bad allergic reaction or a small one. It depends on how the animal reacts to the bites and how numurous they are. If there are a lot of them but the animal is not severely allergic, he can recover. However if there are as few as 50 bites and the animal is severely allergic then he may die. If they were fire ants, then take him to the vet immediatley. They sound like they may be do to their aggressive nature. In short, if there appears to be more than 50 or more bites or your dogs bites are swelling and red TAKE HIM TO THE VET!! THE LEAST YOU CAN DO IS CONSULT A VET BY PHONE IF YOURE NOT SURE IF THE CONDITION THE DOG IS IN IS SERIOUS OR NOT EVEN IF IT LOOKS MINOR!

Top Choice is a slow acting contact kill that last about 12 months. It will take 4 to 6 weeks, but results are great. Apply at 2 to 3 lbs per 1000 feet. Advion is a 48 hour kill that is non-toxic to almost everything but ants. Apply at 2 lbs per acre. Both products cost about $40 per bag and work!!! If you go with a bait like Amdro, you MUST apply every 90 days to be effective. DO NOT pour a pile on the ant bed. Application rate is on the bag. Make sure all these products are applied to flower beds too. Check local feed stores. Home Depot sometimes has Top Choice. Pets will not be effected unless you feed it to them by the pound.

Ants carry a type of poison inside them called that when they bite is injected into the skin. About 95% of fire ant venom is water-insoluble (cannot be washed off by water ) is nonproteinaceous, and contains dialkylpiperidine hemolytic factors. Dialkylpiperidine hemolytic factors induce the release of histamine and other things resulting in a sterile pustule at the sting site.
The best ting I can tell you is to stay close to your dog as long as you can and give it all the love you can afford to give.

(I'M NOT A VET)Yes, they can. If the dog id very bad take him to the vet. In the mean time (as an emergency treatment) Depending on the size of dog!!!! Benedryl works the same on dogs and can prevent anaphalectic shock. They don't need much though. It also helps with the itch and sting. A warm bath with a lot of baking soda mixed in it also helps.

He needs to go to the vet. Also, when he recovers, you can
buy some ant repellent which attaches to the hose and spray
his outside area to get rid of the problem. Check the labels, but most repellents are pet friendly after they dry. Good luck.

Take your dog to a vet, they're the experts. Humans can die or suffer, especially if they are allergic, the very old or young. Err on the safe side, get in your car with your dog and go.

Fire ants are the species in the USA known to kill animals and people.
This pdf file discusses fire ants and the danger they can pose to man and animals.

This article discusses allergic reactions to fire ant bites and the symptoms;
http://www.nofireants.com/news/dangerous_allergies/
The greatest danger is due to anaphylactic shock, which is extreme life threatening allergic reaction to the bites.
These links discuss anaphylactic shock and symptoms of allergy reactions in dogs.
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1707&articleid=507
http://www.seefido.com/html/first_diagnosis.htm
Chances are that if your dog had gone into anaphylactic shock from the bites, he would be dead by now, since anaphylactic shock happens very quickly after the exposure to the allergen that the animal is reacting to.
Still, if your dog shows signs of severe allergic reaction, it would be wise to have the vet see him and treat him.
A reaction doesn't have to be as severe as life threatening anaphylactic shock, to cause medical problems.
