Do some people say "hon" or "honey"? It's really annoying. I don't care that you're old enough to be my mother, don't say "hon". It's condescending and it sounds like you're trying to assert your supposed authority through your age. The point of the internet is that it's a level playing field by virtue of its anonymity. So next time you even think about saying "hon", stop.

By the by, I would say this to your face if you called me "hon", especially in the way that it's said the majority of the time here: condescendingly. Call me rude or tactless, but it still does not change the fact that you are being patronizing.

"Honey....did you actually BUY the computer, and do you PAY for internet service? Your mom's house, your mom's rules. Sorry, but as soon as you learn to follow rules, you will be treated better. You deserved whatever you got..."
I don't know the rules about quoting other people, but this is one such answer from a person who will be left anonymous, that illustrates exactly what I'm saying.

I understand calling someone hon as a sort of local thing, considering that I live in the South, but that is not the way it is used on Yahoo! Answers. Keep it coming though, guys.

'Honey', 'Sweetheart', 'Sugar'... these terms are often local expressions, in the South lots of people use them and they don't mean it to sound condescending. But in other areas -including where I grew up- they're only used among lovers (and then I mean when they're still in the stage of kissing and walking as if they were siamese twins, LOL, even married people rarely use these words) and to babies/toddlers. I *know* local customs vary, but I still agree with you it sounds sickly sweet and inappropriate to me too... I just try not to mind 'cause I know it's just a cultural difference most of the time but that doesn't mean I like it!

Hon, honey, sweetie, sweetie pie, baby, ect... It's all the same.
Usually the habit is learned from a parent who does the same thing. It does get really annoying at times but I guess it's better than being called jerk, creep, @$$hole, etc...

i say honey when i am trying to be nasty and condescending sometimes. actually the other day i was iming with someone and i typed it as term of endearment. then i looked at it and went argggh. that looks bad. kinda mean. so i blurted something else nice out quickly to try and cover it. also sugar is a nice little favorite when i want to be mean in a nice way. he** if they got it coming they deserve it. sure they started it anyway since i try and be all frigging nice to everyone.

Wow, you should visit Australia and watch what happens when elderly men forget themselves and address young women that they don't know as "love" (and similarly, older women often address young men and women as "love"). Like you take you car into the garage and ask if they can fix your car, and the guy takes your keys and says "No worries, love!".
As a younger woman, it used to make me fume. I still have an inward cringe, but now I smile and let it pass. We all need to "chill"....

uh huh, well, you need to take your own advice then and stop trying to be demanding and forcing your childish wants upon everyone else. Stop being so crabby too. The world does not revolve around you and your desires, certainly not the internet. Most everyone does not mean it the way you make it out to be - it is all in your attitude and how you interpret it, as you cannot hear the nuances of speech.

Some people do use it as a tool for demeaning someone.
Some people use it as a term of endearment.
I don't think calling someone sweettits is a good idea either. But that may only be me.

that anonymity is fantastic, isn't it? people can be downright rude, foul-mouthed, righteous and arogant and nobody will think anything of it.
but shen push comes to shove, you are still a hot-headed whatsit who needs to respect others' dialets and keep your anger in check before this website turns into a place to vent your fury on the general public.

lol. It annoys me sometimes, too. Like, in real life when people say "honey" or "sweetie"
It makes me sound a lot younger and makes them a lot older.
