Yes, they can bite and scratch them.
The smell actually stuns them for a second, then burns their eyes and nose.

Usually, cats won't fight one though.

Also, skunks carry Rabies. Bad news. Prevent your cats from tangling with skunks whenever you can.

They shouldn't. Cats don't usually push things when it comes to the local wildlife, preferring to leave possums, raccoons and skunks alone since they're all the same size or slightly bigger AND they're all considered meat eaters to some degree.

Yeah, I know that skunks and possums are omnivores a lot more than carnivores, but I've seen our local cats be ok with skunks and just ignore them. The skunks only were interested in the grubs in the lawn and a little bit of the dry cat food, they didn't even bother looking at the cats.

However if you have one that's sick, then they won't be acting normal if they're out and about. Rabies is common in skunks, bats and foxes, so it's a concern on that point. Make sure your cats have their rabies shots for protection.

If they get sprayed up close it can be very painful for them. Please don't encourage your cat to tangle with a skunk!

They could, but cats are generally smart enough to avoid them.
